One of my favourite comedy movies of all-time is Old School. Mitch (Luke Wilson), Frank (Wil Ferrell) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn) try to turn back the clock and re-live their glory days by starting their own college fraternity. This movie is filled with many great quotes and scenes.

Here are a few of my favourites:

Mitch catches his girlfriend cheating on him, moves out and that leads to them starting their own fraternity in his new house.

Beanie’s rant during Frank’s wedding ceremony is awesome.

Or how about Frank’s infamous response in the debate regarding the government’s role in supporting innovation in the field of biotechnology.

“What happened, I blacked out.” Classic line.

And of course one of the best motivational speeches you will see. Frank telling the guys to remain calm.

1. The @Edmonton Oilers should take Frank’s advice right now. They can’t lose their composure, and they have to find a way to end their four-game losing streak.

2. Things change fast in the NHL. Last week the Oilers were the only team in the NHL who hadn’t lost three games in a row. Suddenly they’ve lost four, and if they lose tonight they will become the 17th team to have a five-game winless streak.

3. Detroit had the longest, going 0-10-2. They also had a seven game losing streak. New Jersey went 0-6-1. San Jose has had streaks of 0-5-1 and 0-5-0. Toronto and Calgary each had a six-game winless streak at 0-5-1 and 11 other teams have gone winless in five games including the Dallas Stars who went 0-4-1 earlier this year.

4. Only eight teams have yet to have a four-game winless streak: Arizona, Florida, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Washington and Winnipeg.

5. Edmonton played well for long stretches against the Maple Leafs on Saturday, but then they made some huge mental errors and the puck ended up in the back of their net. They made bad line changes, or didn’t change when they should, which led directly to goals against Minnesota and Toronto. That can’t continue if they want to end their losing skid. Mental mistakes have crushed them lately.

6. And the Captain Obvious note of the day is that can’t keep playing from behind. They trailed Buffalo, Minnesota and Toronto 2-0 and were down 3-0 to Carolina. They managed to come back and tie Buffalo, Carolina and Minnesota, but then lost in OT or regulation. They are 2-8-1 when trailing after 20 minutes and they are 2-12-1 when losing after the second period. They are 10-2-1 when leading after the first period and 11-0-1 when leading after 40 minutes.

7. The Oilers are 14-4-1 when they score first. Only four teams have more wins when scoring first and all four of them have 15 wins. The problem for the Oilers is the Stars are one of those teams. They are 15-2-2 when lighting the lamp first. The Stars sit 19th in winning percentage, .267 (4-9-2), when the other team scores first and the Oilers are 21st at .250% (4-9-3). If you place in-game wagers, then putting down some cash on the team who scores first would seem like a solid gamble.

8. Here is the Oilers scoring last year compared to this season, as well as the Stars scoring, through 35 games.

9. The Stars forwards have scored 75 goals and 168 points. They are 25th in goals by a forwards and sit 28th in points by forwards. Edmonton’s forwards have scored the fifth most goals in the NHL and sit fourth with 226 points. Of course, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are a main reason for that, but the Stars are winning because they don’t give up many goals.

10. The Stars allow the fewest goals in the NHL at only 2.29/game. The Oilers have been sliding down those rankings and they are now 18th allowing 3.09 goal/game. Edmonton is 15th in goals/game at 2.97, while Dallas is 26th at 2.62 goals/game. It is very rare for a team to outscore their mistakes. Edmonton must eliminate the major breakdowns or their streak will continue. The Oilers are on the wrong type of streak, and will look to end it tonight. We’ll see if they are more successful than Frank “The Tank” was in his streaking attempt.
