William Lagesson has been recalled from the AHL and Mike Smith has been moved to the Long-Term Injured Reserve

The Oilers made a flurry of roster moves on Friday.

Darnell Nurse and Slater Koekkoek have been placed on the Injured Reserve, Philip Broberg and William Lagesson have been recalled from the Bakersfield Condors, and Mike Smith has been moved to the Long-Term Injured Reserve.

Both Nurse and Koekoek were injured during the Oilers’ 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night.

Koekoek fell awkwardly into the boards after throwing a hit and he would wind up playing just 3:29 over the course of the game. Nurse played a whopping 31:21 but felt some discomfort after the game ended. He’ll be out for a few weeks but the word right now is that the injury won’t be long-term.

Coming up in their places will be a pair of defenders from the Condors. One of them is a familiar face, William Lagesson, who has played 27 games with the Oilers over the past two seasons. The other, Philip Broberg, is a rookie who will be making his NHL debut.

The Smith thing is nothing new. We already know that Smith suffered a setback in his recovery from a lower-body injury suffered back in the team’s third game of the season and that he’ll be out for some time.

Moving him to the LTIR gives Edmonton the flexibility to recall Lagesson and Broberg. The latter has performance bonuses on his entry-level contract that need to be accounted for and the Oilers are tight against the salary cap ceiling.
