No joy in the Nation

Maybe it was the fact that Trevor Linden had both his number retired and oddly had a gate of the arena dedicated in his name earlier in the night. Maybe it was the fact that this team looks like it would lose in a slap fight with a six-year-old girl right now. Either way the Oilers gassed another last night -– this time to fall to 14-14-2 despite what our standings on the OilersNation will tell you.

It was better than the previous game, we will give them that. But that’s kind of like saying “Being hit with a sledgehammer in the side of the head sure hurts less than being hit by a car.” Neither option feels good exactly –- but one does feel better than the other. Still the Christmas Miracle we prayed to Santa for three short days ago has come back a roundhouse kick to the face. With a candy cane to follow, we imagine. Thanks Santa.

Yeah yeah glimmers of hope

Oh joy, Jumbo Donair potted another one. That’s his ninth and he has essentially shut all his critics down with his calibre of play. Not that it has silenced all of his critics mind you, but the ones that are able to read can see his level of output has increased dramatically since MacT stapled his large posterior to the press box and have shut up.

Sweet Georgia Brown, the Little One found some scraps in front of the net and jammed home a score. We are sure that the recap of the goal was used hours later in a great pick-up line at some club in Vancouver. You will excuse us if we don’t write 5000 words about how he is turning the corner heading into the Xmas break.

First Star

Oh, let’s see here… Who merits first-star standings on the Oil last night? Shucks, we will go unsung-hero on your asses and say El Capitan Ethan Moreau was the best Oiler on the ice. Maybe he didn’t make it onto the score sheet but he had six PIM and five shots on net in only 11:53 worth of ice time. Was physical all night and tried to use the tools at his disposal to keep the team in the game.

First worst star

Though we have been defending him of late –- particularly to Gord who believes Horcoff should be traded, waived or executed if no takers can be found –- we will have to hand this off to Horcoff. He ate up a ton of ice time (24:48) yet managed not a single shot on net en route to a -1 night. We didn’t see him cycling, playing the body or doing any of the things that makes him the goods on most nights.

Final thought

Let’s be clear. There is no bandwagon jumping here at the Nation. And you can see that this is the case because incredibly the JL meeting last night was the busiest we have had all season long. Now that’s a Christmas miracle. We will still be in attendance on Friday against the Ducks. If they lose that one the headline will read “Local jackass mistakes usher for MacTavish and demands resignation during second intermission. Finds out he is wrong, starts to cry, wets pants.”

Now that will be something worth writing about.

that is probably why you just hang out in the locker room and only sing the anthem the odd time.

    Now that is funny!

Ruotsolainen… ruotsalainen… Isn't that the player that Glen Sather kept protecting on waivers and as a result we lost a bunch of players in the expansion drafts?

Does MacT have pictures of someone with rubber boots, assless chaps and sheep? Why is he still here? Nothing is happening except production of steaming smelly coilers.

Wayne: How fast is the car going? I make take sudden death over watching another game….I mean over a sledge hammer beating….last time, it wasn't much fun.

Oil are struggling right now but 'worst team in the NHL'…not going to go that far.
If any of them played with half the heart that Moreau did we'd be a good team. Yes, some of his penalties aren't the best timed but at least he is showing that he's pissed off and is trying to do something. He's not going to score a Hemsky-like goal so do what he does best.

  • You know what I noticed last night? The PK after Moreau took the roughing call for sticking up for Sammy was one of our better PK's I've seen in a long time.

They were hard on loose pucks, challenging the puck carriers, clearing the puck with authority and generally being a nuisance for the Vancouver PP. I don't recall if they ever really got set up on that PP.

Why was that? The only thing I can speculate is that they WANTED to kill that penalty to Moreau because, while it may have not been the right time for the captain to take that penalty, he was just being a good teammate by sticking up for the little guy…so the team returned the favor.

It just goes to show you that this team can be capable when they want to.

So of the Blues, Isles, Thrashers, or Lightning, which one would you like to trade teams straight across for right now, including development players?

Wanye, I think what you were looking for is 'one does not hurt as much as the other.'

I think the biggest positive from this game is the Oilers were actually hitting people. Stortini started it off be demolishing O'Brien and the rest of the team jumped on it. I even saw Samwise Gamgee making hits last night. I loved the Moreau hit on Sammy 'broken glass' Salo.

Looking at the stat sheet, Oilers fans weren't the only ones not watching the game. Who ever was responsible for recording hit totals for the game was obviously asleep or waiting in line for beer, the bathroom or Elisha Cuthbert. How does Moreau not register a hit on the scoresheet? That what he did all game long, every shift! Cole with 1? I noticed at least 4. I saw Cogs make a least 5 hits yet he is also at 1.

That is one stat that needs some definate improvement and consistancy around the league.

I have to disagree about Moreau being first star. While he did have a pretty good game, he is the captain and he cant take stupid penalties. the oilers were gaining momentum playing well in the 3rd when gagne got hit behind the net. i like to see a player stand up for his team mate but it was a clean hit and gagne was fine. Moreau was very lucky that he fell over when he grabbed mitchell(or whoever it was) if not for that there would have been a fight and moreau would have gotten 2 for instigating 5 for fighting and a ten effectively ending his night. the roughing minor was bad enough for killing the oilers flow.

Worst team in the NHL!!! What a fu__ing joke, I never seen a team full of such talentless pussies in my life!!! I've been watching the Oil since 83 so I've seen some sub par years, but this the worst!! Blackhawks!! now thats how you play hockey! They should watch tapes of their games over and over. Time to clean house!!
