Draft Lottery… Here We Go Again ***Updated***

Well, well, well… Look where we’re at… again. For the 300th consecutive season, Oilers fans will be watching TSN to see what another pitiful season’s reward will be. It’s no doubt that the Tambellini’s tie jokes will be flying, in full force, as we hope and pray that the Oilers will be picking 1st overall for the 4th time in 5 years. First, third, or fourth – what will it be?  Such is life in the City of Champi…. Uhh… Nevermind.

When the season started, the last thing any of us expected was another date with the draft lottery. For me personally, the idea of watching the lottery was repulsive, almost offensive to the core of my being. The rebuild has gone on for decades and another top pick wasn’t supposed to be in the cards anymore, and I was excited about that. We were supposed to make a push for the playoffs, not suck to the point of depression.  This year, we were supposed to be debating our first playoff opponent not which player we’re hoping for.  Ohhh how we overestimated.

Another Scratch Ticket

Tonight, the Oilers have a 14.2% chance at picking 1st at the draft, and a 100% chance of James Duthie making fun of Craig MacTavish for being a yearly guest at the lottery. Oh the memories. Anyway… Join me in watching the spectacle and cheering on the Oilers logo to be the last to flash across the screen.  I want to see Bill Daly hold up the Oilers logo and imagine the cheshire grin that used to flash across Tambellini’s face.  I want the rest of the NHL to think that the lottery is rigged because once again we hold the power to choose who we want.  I want the Sabres terrible season to get one last kick to the pills!  Oh the sadness…

The draft lottery show starts at 6pm mst on TSN and it will give us a better idea which player we may be seeing in the fall. Unfortunately, it was another year of wanting cereal but the milk has, once again, gone bad.  I can’t wait for another 2 months of arguing who the Oilers will pick. Summer is always so much fun! *sigh*

Top 5 – Draft Order

1. Florida

2. Buffalo

3. Edmonton

4. Calgary

5. Islanders (unless they give this pick to Buffalo as part of the Vanek trade)

    We need a centre.

    6 Leon Draisaitl C 10/27/95 L 6.00.5 199 Prince Albert WHL 6 4NA

Draisaitl is only not much bigger than Gagner who is 5-11 204 lbs.

I get he is 18, but he is not going to be a huge man (Thorton, Getzlaf).

I would go with the higher skill center and add size on the wing.

Whoever they draft I hope that player spends another year in junior. Gain size and experience. Spread out the expensive contracts.

Whoever wants to trade the pick or Yakupov. Even if you trust MacT. Do you trust the pro scouts enough to make that trade ? I don’t.

Do you trust MacT after his endorsement of Eakins and Schultz ? Apperently Schultz is the next Coffey and can write his own ticket. I’m not sure.

Why do I think the Oilers will screw all this up ? Evidence of the past is a good prediction of the future.

    Florida picks Ekblad
    Buffalo picks Bennett
    Edmonton will pick Drasaitl.

Reinhart is a Nuge clone and we don’t need wo small centers. Agree that Bennett may be the best centre skill and compete wise but I think he’s gone before 3. Calgary is going to be getting scary in a couple years too. Monahan and Reinhart…

Ok oiler fans, certain things need to be cleared up:

NO FRANCHISE PLAYERS ARE AVAILABLE IN THIS DRAFT INCLUDING AARON EKBLAD. REPEAT. EKBLAD IS NOT PROJECTED AS A FRANCHISE DMAN. Tim Murray said himself, likely not a franchise dman. Could he become one? Sure. Likely a good number 3.

this is looking like the 2007 draft where good complimentary players can be had.

Ekblad scores 65% on the power play and is prone to defensive mistakes but can play a good two way game

Bennet is smaller but intense. Mini toews. Not sure how well it translates to the NHL

Draisatl plays centre not wing. Centre. Big and controls the play. Excellent passer and awareness. Protects the puck well.

Reinhart has high hockey iq like nuge. Isn’t big or flashy.

I’d be happy with anyone of these guys including dal colle.

I lean to draisaitl as we desperately need a centre with size that can put up points in the system.

Draft Leon with the third pick. Trade ganger and yak plus a prospect to the. Jets for Buf and Kane. Find another veteran d to help out the young guys and a vet third or fourth liner.

Leon Draisaitl will probably be a decent centre in the NHL. But he is not going to be the star player that some on here think that he will be. He is a soft offensive player who is not good defensively and does not back check. He protects the puck well against the smaller junior players, but against the larger NHL players, he will probably struggle to be as good. Sam Bennett is a great two way player who competes hard, and plays well in both ends of the ice. Bennett would be along the lines of a Toews, Bergeron or Doug Gilmore type of player. It should be a complete no brainier to take Bennett if he is available.

    • Dockstaff

I live in PA and have watched Draisitl the past two seasons. He is strong on the puck in the corners, but he doesn’t back check. He’s slower than avg and has an average shot. Quick release but avg power.

Most of the Oilers now don’t back check, so other than having something in common with his teammates, Draisitl would not be the best pick.

Bennett or Reinhart. Strong, smart Centres who can play 200ft & score points. We haven’t seen that since Dougie Weight.

    Oiler Domination To Follow

    Panthers will take Reinhert.

    Sabres will take Bennett.

    Oilers will take Ekblad.

Defencemen always drop at the draft… Larsson, Hedman, Jones, etc.
