PETER CHIARELLI NAMED PRESIDENT OF HOCKEY OPS & GENERAL MANAGER

Reaper

This is a big day. For years we’ve been clamouring for changes in the Oilers management team and now they are finally happening. I doubt this is the last shoe to drop but, in the very least, this is the start of a very interesting transition for this franchise.

NICHOLSON

CHIARELLI

MY TAKE…

For years fans have been looking for change in management, and it happened today. What does that mean for the future of the Oilers? We can’t be sure yet, but it’s an interesting transition from a regime that has been around for years. Will some of the core be shipped out? What kind of personnel changes can we expect? What happens to MacT? According to Bob Nicholson he is still with the organization but who knows for how long?

I’m not sure any of this has even soaked in for me yet. All I know for sure is that this is a new day for an Oilers franchise that has been spinning its tires for a long time.

More to come…

Misery loves company. Chia has a spotty track record which got him fired elsewhere. Now he is married to an organization in a downward spiral. I hope it works out. Good luck!

    • Mason Storm

What’s spotty about his record? Trading Seguin because he was a distraction and taking away from the team philosophy or trading Boychuk cause they needed cap space? Besides that’s he’s delivered teams at or near the top of the conference, 2 stanley cup appearances and one win, signed a Norris trophy winner, participated as an exec in the last 2 gold medal winning Olympics and I’m sure I could find more, but this is running long as it is

    • A Little Less Concerned

GM’s and coaches are recycled through the league all the time. The ONLY way to not have that happen is bringing in a guy with little or no experience.

Would you rather see them promote Nelson to GM simply to avoid someone that had a few bad trades? No GM in this league can say they have a spotless record. Every GM has an idea as to what will work and screws up. It happens. A good GM or even coach for that matter learns from those mistakes.

I for one think this is a huge upgrade on what we had. Add to the fact that the guy in charge of figuring out what was wrong with the franchise not only saw the problem but was able to DECISIVELY fix it, bodes well for this team.

Also, the guy with the “spotty” record, won a cup and ended up in the finals in his tenure.

      Just saying…

  • Relief we finally get new direction , albeit from an Eastern GM . Building a heavy club out West would appear to be harder than doing it in the East , however . Changing Oilers overall soft culture no easy task .

Katz deserves credit for making the bold moves that were necessary to improve this team. His hockey people failed to make the necessary moves, but he, unlike his hockey people is learning from his past mistakes.

    @YFC Prez…
…incredible story and I’m more than happy for him…beauty story that he escaped the oiler drama and landed right behind a decent set of defencemen…kinda where all goalies should be…let’s see if this new guy can get the blue ‘heavy’ and good so whoever ends up between the pipes isn’t chased outta town …

    Oiler Domination To a Follow

I think the handling of Dubnyk and Petry cost MacT his remaining supporters.

He made a couple solid moves, he is diligent in his scouting and would be an asset in an assistant GM or an advisor role.

Oilers have cap space and a ton of draft picks, with a lot of expiring contracts in 2016 – the teams in good shape. Excited to see what Chiarelli does with it. #mcsaviour

  • The GREAT Walter White

Some IP address banning is in order shortly. Keep it Oilers and Hockey Talk.

It just gets better from here My Oiler fan Brothers. The rest can read and weep or kiss my ass.

  • Petrolero

I saw Bob Nicholson today less as a grim reaper and more as a fairy godfather granting oilers fans all their wishes. I still hope for more to goodness to come. And I am still in shock and awe about all of this.

  • Dwayne Roloson 35

I am thrilled Lowe and McTavish are out, but after the last 9 years of false promises why are we believing things will be different.

I will only believe it when I see it.

Chiarelli just took a cup winner that had a core largely assembled before he got there and left them in shambles. Poor cap management, bad contracts for guys with intangibles and the Seguin trade…….

    • The GREAT Walter White

The Bruins that won the 2011 cup had 3 players that were on the roster when PC took over in 2006. Bergeron, Thomas and Mark Stuart.

You should check your facts before you spout off.

why does anyone care if Katz’s kid goes to the podium. Tell me one way this effects the team. He’s a kid who’s probably day is made by seeing a player he admires shake his hand. Grown adults worrying about a child having a good day. I’m a life long oilers fan and you ppl make me hate what this has become. Grow up and get a life. More so go home and tell your kid he can’t have anything good happen to him. Get over it. It’s a small simple thing that makes a kids day. Jealousy in its finest form

This isn’t a make a wish foundation granting a dying kid his death bed wish. The kid wants high fives and pics he can do it after.

      Two things:

      1) you are making the moment about yourself and your family and not the kid who busted his ass to get to this position.

      2) it looks like you are celebrating your organizations abject failure. If this was some random draw of 30 teams and you won…. be thrilled. When it’s because you finish nearly last dvery year it’s time to act a titch more sombre and appropriate.

      • CMG30

You make me sick. Make more jokes about the make a wish who I have a fund set up in my dads name. Not sure how it makes it look like its celebrating failure and the only ones drawing attn to it are you ppl that bitch about it. My point is it affects nothing. No one cares. Let it go. Turning the oilers around will not be affected by a kid. I don’t think Hall, Nuge or Yak have ever felt slighted or overshadowed by It

  • Zarny

I am sick about this. Why so many changes all at once. MacT was hit with a major hammer he almost had it over the roof with draft and free agents in the waiting.

Not everyone will feel good about this except for those that never had season ticket or have even been to a game and blog silliness.

I had seat from the beginning and saw all the stars come in and fumble (except Gretzky)

This tells me much about the newest management.

    God Bless!
