The Winnipeg Jets made a pair of additions ahead of Friday afternoon’s trade deadline.
The team added defenceman Luke Schenn from the Pittsburgh Penguins and they acquired winger Brandon Tanev from the Seattle Kraken. Pittsburgh is getting a second-round pick in 2026 and a fourth-round pick in 2027 while Seattle is getting a second-round pick in 2027.

The Jets lead the NHL with a 43-16-4 record thanks largely to an MVP-calibre season from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who has a .926 save percentage in 47 games, and a power play that’s scoring on 31.9 percent of its opportunities. Adding Schenn and Tanev will improve Winnipeg’s team defence and their penalty kill.
This is the second time that Schenn has been traded this season and it’s the sixth time the 35-year-old has been dealt in his NHL career. Earlier this week, the Nashville Predators moved Schenn along with Tommy Novak to the Penguins in exchange for Michael Bunting and a draft pick.
Schenn was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft. He spent four seasons with Toronto before getting traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for James van Riemsdyk in June of 2012.
The native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan spent time with the Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, and Leafs for a second go-around before joining Nashville on a three-year, $8.25 million deal in July of 2023.
Tanev joined the Jets in 2016 as an undrafted free agent after four seasons at Providence College. After four years in Winnipeg, he signed a six-year, $21 million deal with the Penguins but played just two seasons there before being picked by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 expansion draft.
Over 60 games with Seattle in 2024-25, the 33-year-old winger has nine goals and 17 points. Tanev has 83 goals and 175 points in 533 NHL games for his career.
