Welcome to the Oilersnation Draft Countdown. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been aggregating content about the top 100 players who will be available in Vancouver on June 21st and 22nd. Here are profiles for Nils Hoglander, Ville Heinola, Arthur Kaliyev, Alex Vlasic, Pavel Dorofeyev, Simon Holmstrom, Bobby Brink, Jakob Pelltier, Samuel Poulin, Philip Tomasino.

30. Nils Hoglander

Date of Birth: 20 Dec 2000 (Age 18)
Nation: Sweden
Place of Birth: Bocktrask, SWE
Position: LW   Shoots: Left
Height: 5’9″     Weight: 185 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Rogle BK (SHL)
Profile: Despite being somewhat undersized, plays a tough game going hard to the net and throwing open-ice hits. Plays a responsible 200-foot game, has speed and good hands to create scoring opportunities.
“… a hard-nosed competitor whose nonstop motor makes short work of bigger defenders in both open ice and in the corners. Hoglander’s effort is infectious, but he also can make quick reaction plays that lead to quality chances for either himself or his linemates. He’s quick, finishes his checks and creates turnovers during a relentless forecheck.” -Steve Kournianos, The Draft Analyst
“… Even though Rögle is one of the worst teams in the SHL and Höglander’s minutes have been limited, he’s managed to put up good numbers considering his age. Höglander is a very talented skater with speed that allows him to get breakaway opportunities quite frequently. He has quick and soft hands which allow him to make highlight reel type plays. He’s also a quick thinker who likes to use all those qualities and play a fast-paced game. On top of those qualities, Höglander works really hard and is defensively responsibly as well. And even though he’s undersized at just 5-foot-9, he’s fearless on the ice. He likes to get his nose dirty in front of the net, and he loves to throw big open ice hits. Höglander has top-six upside but even if his offensive upside doesn’t fully materialize, he can still become a great third-liner. He will likely require another year of development before challenging for a spot on an NHL roster.” -Jokke Nevalainen, dobberprospects.com

29. Ville Heinola

Date of Birth: 2 Mar 2001 (Age 18)
Nation: Finland
Place of Birth: Honkajoki, FIN
Position: D      Shoots: Left
Height: 5’11”   Weight: 181 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Lukko (Liiga)
Profile: Swift and smooth skating defensemen who will start the rush either on his own with his speed or with an excellent outlet stretch-pass.
“Heinola is a swift-skating puck rusher with first-step quickness and agility who always keeps his feet moving with or without the puck. An excellent skater who turns smoothly, Heinola is a strong puck manager who controls the flow of his shifts with acute awareness and poise… incredibly elusive in all three zones and finds a way to maintain possession despite being chased around by one or more opponents… whips timely stretch passes right onto the tape of a streaking teammate from as far back as his own goal line. Running a power play comes effortlessly for Heinola, who owns the perfect quick-release shot for creating rebounds. His slot coverage and ability to shut down puck carriers at his own line are works in progress, and he concedes a lot of room in the low slot. Still, Heinola is willing to take a hit to move the puck, and he will finish checks against any opponent.” -Steve Kournianos, The Draft Analyst
“Heinola doesn’t have blazing top speed but he’s a smooth skater. He’s excellent at using his edges which is very important for a modern defenseman. His agility and acceleration are excellent. His skating seems effortless which allows him to play big minutes. He’s a very talented skater, and top speed is likely something he can improve over the next few years… has a really good wrist shot. If he can sneak in close enough, he’s definitely capable of scoring with it. He could probably add more power to it but at least it seems to be pretty accurate. And he doesn’t require a lot of time with his release.” -Jokke Nevalainen, dobberprospects.com

28. Arthur Kaliyev

Date of Birth: 26 June 2001 (Age 17)
Nation: USA
Place of Birth: Tashkent, UZB
Position: LW    Shoots: Left
Height: 6’2″     Weight: 190 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL)
Profile: Possesses an elite-level shot and is a shoot-first, pure goal-scorer; gets to high danger scoring areas, but will shoot– and often score– from anywhere.
“A pure sniper with a shot for the ages… Kaliyev is following up his 31-goal season with an even better sophomore campaign. The Staten Island-born winger is a high-volume shooter who can knock a goalie off his skates with his Filip Forsberg-esque wrister from the circle…” -Steve Kournianous, The Draft Analyst
“Kaliyev possesses an elite level shot, an NHL caliber shot. OHL coaches voted him as having the best shot in the Eastern Conference.. His numbers suggest that he can beat a goaltender from anywhere on the ice. Kaliyev shot 31.6% from high danger zone shots, 11.9% from mid danger zone areas and 14.2% from low danger zone areas. -Dominic Tiano, The OHL Writers

27. Alex Vlasic

Date of Birth: 5 June 2001 (Age 18)
Nation: USA
Place of Birth: Willmette, IL
Position: D      Shoots: Left
Height: 6’6″     Weight: 198 lbs.
2018-19 Team: U.S. National U18 Team (USDP)
Profile: Towering defenseman with surprising agility and smart play-making abilities, starting the rush with quick, hard outlet passes. Committed to Boston University through the 2020-21 season.
“… has pro upside written all over him thanks to his size, physicality, soft hands and booming shot. He’s the perfect player to match up against opposing top lines because his static coverage radius goes beyond the low slot.” -Steve Kournianous, The Draft Analyst
“Chicago-area defensive prospect with fluid feet and lots of size already. Still raw, but quickly advancing as an all-around force on the backline. This a tall USA defender with an excellent overall skill package. Has a high panic threshold and stays cool under pressure, never scrambling and throwing pucks away. A sharp outlet passer in transition and when in the attack zone, he reads the attack well and uses his strong wrists to deliver precise on the stick passes. takes away centre ice and closes his gaps well in the back pedal. Closes off passing lanes and reacts to what is happening in the moment. will break out in transition and make good decisioned outlets, and occasional home-run pass, but isn’t looked at as a future NHL mailman as an attacker. Is good offensively from the blue line and makes plays back there. Committed to Boston College. -Bill Placzek, draftsite.com

26. Pavel Dorofeyev

Date of Birth: 26 Oct 2000 (Age 18)
Nation: Russia
Place of Birth: Nizhny Tagil, RUS
Position: LW/RW   Shoots: Left
Height: 6’0″           Weight: 163 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Metallurg Magnitogorsk (KHL)
Profile: Offensively-minded dual-winger with good hands and a willingness to get to the net, but is also responsible defensively.
“One of the most intelligent dual-threat wingers in his draft class, Dorofeyev is a key cog in Stalnye Lisy’s top line that generates most of their offense at even strength. He may not have the immediate ‘wow’ factor that you see in Andre Svechnikov, but Dorofeyev’s ability to make defenders bounce off of him while barreling towards the net is strikingly similar to the 2018 top prospect. You can count on him to make the proper decisions in open ice or during odd-man rushes.” -Steve Kournianous, The Draft Analyst
“… can create a scoring chance out of nothing. He has all the tools in the attacking area. The biggest concern is about the translation of his ‘east-west’ playing style to the pros.” -Cam Robinson, dobberprospects.com
“Intriguing long term prospect who still needs to get stronger, fill out his big frame and continue to development his game. Displays good hands, net drive, and good defensive presence in his overall play. Lacks first step explosion but he is still developing. This skilled winger is a big riser and the team selecting him will be patiently wait for his payoff.” -Bill Placzek, draftsite.com

25. Simon Holmstrom

Date of Birth: 24 May 2001 (Age 18)
Nation: Sweden
Place of Birth: Tranas, SWE
Position: RW    Shoots: Left
Height: 6’1″      Weight: 192 lbs.
2018-19 Team: HV71 J20 (SuperElit)
Profile: An fast and agile winger, who owns a good shot but is a playmaker-first; latest season was hampered by injuries which may hurt his draft stock.
“A speedy winger with excellent vision and puck skills, Holmstrom dealt with an injury that limited his early-season availability. He has the potential to do a lot of damage any time he hits the ice and is comfortable making plays in tight spaces. Holmstrom, however, spends a lot of time on the periphery and waits for things to happen rather than have a say in where the puck winds up. The good news is that he is sound positionally and can turn a loose puck into a scoring chance in the blink of an eye. Holmstrom is a power-play specialist who has an excellent shot and can roof home backhanders from in tight, and his shot prowess prevents opponents from committing to the passing lane. He knows this, and it presents him the perfect opportunity to bring his passing skills to bear. His overall skating is slightly above average, as his fast straight-line speed and agility make up for below-average balance and a lack of power in his stride. He may turn out to be more of a complimentary winger than one who drives possession, but he has proven to be a lethal option when teamed up with muckers and grinders.” -Steve Kournianous, The Draft Analyst
“A year ago, Holmström was seen as a high first-rounder after a great season in the SuperElit as a 16-year-old. But this season has been very difficult for him because he’s had multiple injuries and hasn’t been able to play much because of them. He had a hip surgery in the summer leading up to his draft season, broke his thumb in the first half of the season, and then suffered a concussion in the second half. It’s very unfortunate he’s missed so much time due to injuries during these crucial development years. Holmström is an excellent playmaker from the wing. He has very good vision, and he can make crisp passes. He also has a great shot which makes him a dual-threat. He’s a very talented skater who combines speed with agility. Holmström could be a faller in the NHL Entry Draft because of the injury concerns. But if he’s still available in the second round, his upside is definitely worth a selection there. -Jokke Nevalainen, dobberprospects.com

24. Bobby Brink

Date of Birth: 8 July 2001 (Age 17)
Nation: USA
Place of Birth: Excelsior, MN
Position: RW    Shoots: Right
Height: 5’8″      Weight: 165 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Sioux City Musketeers (USHL)
Profile: Slightly undersized winger, but still plays with energy and toughness, but his shot is his top asset, with both a deadly backhand and wrist-shot. Committed to the University of Denver through the 2020-21 season.
“An electrifying talent with a high IQ… above-average skater blessed with tight-quarter elusiveness, the Minnesota native makes plays look easy regardless of the degree of difficulty. There’s simply no way to prepare for him as he darts towards the net, and his small stature doesn’t prevent him from taking the puck to the cage with authority. Brink’s hands from in close are sick, and he can roof shots from the lip of the goal mouth on either forehand or backhand. He also owns one heck of a wrist shot and can score from distances beyond the hash marks… keeps his head up at all times, and his ability to lure opponents out of passing or shooting lanes makes him an ideal option to run a power play from the half-wall or point. His cross-ice passing and peripheral vision are excellent.” -Steve Kournianous, The Draft Analyst
“Brink has one of the best shots in the 2019 draft class. His wrist shot is accurate and his release is quick and deadly. He also has soft hands and great hand-eye coordination, so he excels at deflections and scoring off of rebounds. His play-making abilities are also highly touted as his stick-handling, vision and passing skills that set up plenty of scoring chances for his teammates. He is hardly a liability in his own zone either. He is quick to provide back pressure and will support his defensemen down low. He has good vision and gets in the passing lanes to create turnovers and get the puck going the other way. Brink is not afraid to get physical to win a battle along the boards and will absorb a big hit in order to make a play.” -Greg Boysen, The Hockey Writers

23. Jakob Pelletier

Date of Birth: 7 Mar 2001 (Age 18)
Nation: Canada
Place of Birth: Quebec City, QC
Position: LW    Shoots: Left
Height: 5’9″      Weight: 161 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)
Profile: Shifty winger who is creative with the puck and uses his superior vision to be an effective playmaker.
“A slick playmaker with very good speed and balance who displays acute awareness of his surroundings, Pelletier is the kind of player that makes you wake up real early in the morning to try and figure out a way to slow him down. He can beat opponents in a variety of ways and being a puck magnet with intensity helps Pelletier wear down defenders of any size. He rarely is far from the puck, and panic is a word you’ll never associate with this cat — Pelletier is incredibly crafty in tight spaces and has a level of grit that keeps him stubborn during lengthy puck battles. A two-way forward who excels on special teams, Pelletier owns a hard, accurate shot and is comfortable firing it off the pass without hesitation.” -Steve Kournianous, The Draft Analyst
“High-pace undersized wing who who displays a high hockey IQ, speed, quickness and a high-level of competitiveness. This is yet another case of a yet another smaller lightweight who projects to continuing being able to play hard in 200 feet of rink, without the benefit of high end functional strength, and displaying a great all around skill package. He finishes plays, make things happen on the forecheck and looks even better when paired with high skilled line mates he can read off of. Good accurate shooter and 60 minute motor. -Bill Placzek, draftsite.com

22. Samuel Poulin

Date of Birth: 25 Feb 2001 (Age 18)
Nation: Canada
Place of Birth: Laval, QC
Position: LW   Shoots: Left
Height: 6’2″     Weight: 207 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL)
Profile: Possesses the frame and size of a pro-level power forward, using it to protect the puck and getting to the high danger scoring areas; also exhibiting good play-making and stick-handling.
“His size, combined with above average puck handling, shooting, and play-making skills makes him an attractive ‘power forward’ NHL prospect. He still needs some work on his foot speed, otherwise, he would be a top 10 pick. The intangible characteristic that scouts will need to consider is his leadership qualities; something that was clearly evident during both the regular season and the playoffs.” -Earl Jessiman, The Hockey Writers
“… a power forward in the making with a strong first step, power moves while in the attack zone, and creating space in the dirty areas because the word on his chippiness got out. Always moving, sidestepping and showing excellent feet in navigating the attack zone and unearthing loose pucks. Protects the puck with his bigger frame and he uses his skating and edging to power into full speed cuts. Has fast feet, fast head and plays fast. Plays both wing positions and processes the game quickly and effectively. It hard for me to imagine he won’t come off the draft board before the last third of the first round. Sometimes your bloodline gets your name called quickly.” -Bill Placzek, draftsite.com

21. Philip Tomasino

Date of Birth: 28 July 2001 (Age 17)
Nation: Canada
Place of Birth: Mississauga, ON
Position: C       Shoots: Right
Height: 6’0″      Weight: 181 lbs.
2018-19 Team: Niagara IceDogs (OHL)
Profile: Speedy winger, who uses it offensively to break away with the puck or get into open ice for to receive a pass, and uses it defensively to steal or work the puck loose from opponents;  also possesses some play-making abilities.
“Tomasino is a high-energy forward and one of the best skaters in the OHL. Add to those attributes a good set of hands and great playmaking abilities, and this is a guy you want on your team. He doesn’t turn 18 until after the draft. In short, Tomasino is all upside.” -Ross Bonander, The Hockey Writers
“Tomasino is a speedy, high-energy player. His engine never quits and he seems to play harder when the opposition has possession. Tomasino is a quick player and keeps his feet moving, even when he has the puck. He can play a physical game, throwing hits to create turnovers or shoulder his way past a defender. His puck possession skills are impressive as the combination of his skills and tenacity lend to solid possession ability. He has a quick release and accurate shot but is equally capable of shooting or creating scoring chances for teammates. Tomasino plays a game that I can see being successful at the NHL level after he has fully developed in time. His ability to force turnovers and steal the puck and ability to produce offence reminds me of Mark Stone.”  Peter Harling, dobberprospects.com
“Tomasino has explosive speed, both in first steps and top end speed. He has excellent agility and able to change direction instantly and has excellent lateral mobility. Along with an ability to read situations quickly, he uses those quick bursts to bust into lanes and make himself available for teammates. He uses that speed to attack defences and, in most cases, that opens up ice for his linemates. When you do that, you have to be able to feed your linemates, and Tomasino can do that. He’s also not shy about taking the puck straight to the net.” Dominic Tiano, The OHL Writers
