Now that Robin Lehner has inked a five-year contract extension to remain in Vegas, Anton Khudobin might be the top goaltender on the open market.

Khudobin is coming off of the best season of his career. He posted a .930 save percentage across 30 regular-season games splitting Dallas’ net with Ben Bishop. And then, come playoff time, with Bishop on the sidelines due to an injury, Khudobin led the Stars all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, posting a .917 save percentage in 25 games.

Of course, it’s also important to mention that Khudobin’s success could partially be due to him playing on a strong defensive team in Dallas. Before joining the Stars, Khudobin had a .915 career save percentage playing 147 games with four different teams, so that should be the expectation more so than the .926 save percentage he had in Dallas over the past two seasons.

Contract Projection: Three years, $4,000,000 AAV.

Should the Oilers be interested? Yes. While I don’t think Khudobin is an elite goalie like his .930 save percentage indicates, he’s a perfect 1B type to split the net with Mikko Koskinen. If Dallas does let him get to free agency, he’s my top option for the Oilers to sign to fill their need in net.

It feels like Tyler Toffoli has been around forever, but he just turned 28 years old in April.

Toffoli was drafted by Los Angeles in the second round of the 2010 draft and broke into the league in 2013-14, serving as a quality depth player on the Kings during their second Stanley Cup run. Since then, he’s eclipsed the 20-goal plateau three times and he’s reached a career-high with 31 goals.

His 2018-19 season was the worst of his career, as he scored just 13 goals in 82 games, but that can mostly be chalked up to the fact the Kings were a miserable team. Toffoli enjoyed a bounceback season in 2019-20, scoring 18 goals in 58 games with L.A. before getting dealt to the Canucks at the trade deadline, where he would add six goals in 10 regular-season games and two more goals in the playoffs.

Toffoli is a pure goal scorer with Stanley Cup pedigree who would be a nice addition to pretty much anybody’s top-six.

Contract Projection: Seven years, $6,545,000 AAV.

Should the Oilers be interested? Yes. Toffoli is a good player and he’s still only 28 years old, so he should have plenty of good years ahead of him. The question, of course, is money. Toffoli is coming off a 24-goal season so he’ll be on the radar of many teams, and there’s no guarantee the Canucks will let him walk, either. If Edmonton were to sign Toffoli, it’s difficult to imagine that they would be able to also fit Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in.
