Erik Haula is one of the castaway players who had a surprising breakout for the Golden Knights during their inaugural season.

After putting up a 15-goal, 26-point season with the Wild, Haula exploded for 29 goals and 55 points with Vegas in 2017-18. Haula got injured the next season and appeared in just 15 games and was then dealt to the Hurricanes as a salary cap dump in the off-season.

He would play 41 games with the Hurricanes, scoring 12 goals and 22 points before getting moved to Florida as part of the deal that sent Vincent Trochek to Carolina. Haula put up just two points in seven games with the Panthers. So, all told, since that 55-point season, Haula has played 63 games and has recorded 31 points, which is basically what his production was in Minnesota.

While that big year in Vegas was clearly an anomaly, Haula is still a good middle-six player with great wheels who can chip in offensively and hold his own defensively. The concern is his durability.

Contract Projection: Four years, $4,000,000 AAV.

Should the Oilers be interested? Maybe. Haula could be an interesting fit alongside Connor McDavid. He has great speed, has produced at a high level in the past, and isn’t a slouch defensively. As I said, though, the worry with Haula is his durability as he’s played just 63 games over the past two years. I would be anxious to give him more than two years on a contract.

A draft pick of the Florida Panthers back in 2007, Dadonov finally broke into the NHL in 2017-18 after spending a decade playing professionally in Russia.

Dadonov has found a niche as the third guy who plays alongside the Panthers’ dynamic duo of Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov. Over the past three seasons, he’s been a consistent producer, scoring 81 goals and 182 points over the course of 225 games.

Dadonov is now 31 years of age and will be searching for the first huge payday of his career, as he’s coming off of a three-year deal worth $4,000,000 annually that ultimately lured him to Florida from the KHL.

Contract Projection: Seven years, $7,000,000 AAV.

Should the Oilers be interested? Maybe. Dadonov has clearly proved to be a high-quality producer offensively over the past three seasons, but there’s also some major risk in handing out a big contract to a player now on the wrong side of 30.
