Welcome to the OilersNation UFA preview. Over the next 15 days, we’ll be profiling the top 30 players in this year’s UFA class, as listed by TSN. Contract information is from our friends at PuckpediaFull UFA list via puckpedia here. Analytics provided by hockeyviz.com and naturalstattrick.com. Contract projections are done by evolving-hockey.com with the presumption contracts are signed between Aug. – Oct. 11.
Today, we’re looking at the 6th ranked Mike Hoffman and the 4th ranked Jacob Markstrom. Robin Lehner was ranked 5th but has already signed an extension with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Mike Hoffman

Mike Hoffman is arguably the best pure goal scorer on the UFA market this fall. While Taylor Hall is clearly the best all-around forward, nobody in this UFA class puts the puck in the back of the net like Hoffman does.
After four consecutive seasons eclipsing the 20-goal plateau in Ottawa, Hoffman got dealt to the Florida Panthers as the Senators went into full-on tank mode. Across two seasons with the Panthers, Hoffman scored 65 goals and 129 points in 151 games.
But, if you dig a little bit further, you can see that Hoffman’s production largely comes on the power play. Of those 65 goals, 28 came on the man advantage while 37 came at even strength. At 30 years of age, Hoffman looks like a prime candidate to be handed a dangerous contract this fall.
Contract Projection: Five years, $6,557,000 AAV.
Should the Oilers be interested? No. At a glance, Hoffman makes sense for the Oilers as they look for an elite triggerman to play alongside Connor McDavid. But Hoffman doesn’t have the even-strength production the Oilers need. They already have an overpaid power-play guy in James Neal and can’t afford another.

Jacob Markstrom

Coming off of the best season of his career, Jacob Markstrom is set to hit free agency for the first time unless the Vancouver Canucks work out an extension in the next few days, which seems unlikely.
Markstrom has been a pillar of consistency for the Canucks the past few years. He posted back-to-back seasons with a .912 save percentage over 60 games and then improved to a .918 save percentage in 2019-20 in a showing that resulted in him finishing in fourth place in Vezina Trophy voting.
The worry with Markstrom is injuries. He had a minor procedure done on his knee back in late-February, recovered while the league was paused, started the playoffs for the Canucks, but then ended up losing the starting gig to Thatcher Demko as he dealt with a groin issue.
Contract Projection: Six years, $6,000,000 AAV.
Should the Oilers be interested? Maybe. Given the fact the Oilers already have Mikko Koskinen in the mix, it’s difficult to rationalize handing out a big contract to a full-time goaltender like Markstrom. Markstrom will surely be looking for a 60-game, starting gig somewhere, and that won’t be the case in Edmonton with Koskinen already here. It makes more sense for Edmonton to go after a 1A/1B guy like Anton Khudobin, even if Markstrom is the better goalie.
