Kevin Lowe hung up the skates from his playing days 24 years ago and now, he’s hanging up the suit and tie.
The Oilers announced Tuesday morning that Lowe would be retiring from his role as vice chair and alternate governor of the Edmonton Oilers.
Kevin Lowe has been an integral part of the Edmonton Oilers for over 40 years and will continue to be connected to the organization as Oilers Ambassador,” said Edmonton Oilers Chairman Bob Nicholson.
“Very few have had the impact that Kevin has had, both on and off the ice. He exemplifies leadership and has done so much to help connect the organization with our fans, while supporting so many worthwhile causes in our community. He is a teammate, leader and friend to so many in the organization and we congratulate him on an amazing career and are excited for this next chapter of his career.”
The first player ever selected by the Edmonton Oilers, Lowe played 15 years for the team appearing in 1037 games scoring 74 goals and 383 points. Lowe was a key cog in the Oilers’ dynasty of the 1980’s, and later went on to win another Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994.
When his playing career ended after the 1997-98 season, he joined the Oilers behind the bench in 1998-99 as an assistant coach, then head coach in 1999-00. A year later, he was named general manager and executive vice-president of hockey operations.
Most notably, Lowe put together some solid Oilers team’s in the early 2000’s, but nothing like the team in 2005-06 that went on a cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Finals. Lowe later worked as the president of hockey operations between 2008 and 2015, before heading into the business side of the organization.
Named to the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the 2020 class, the Oilers retired his No. 4 last November.
