If you’re sitting around with $70,274 USD (about $95,188 CAD) that’s burning a hole in your pocket then I think I may have found a deal for you! Right now, there is a Connor McDavid rookie card up for auction at Lelands Auctions and it’s set to smash the current record (one already held by McDavid) for the most expensive modern day hockey card.
I don’t know about you folks, but I’m constantly blown away by the prices set at some of these auctions when it comes to autographed memorabilia. Don’t get me wrong, I love Connor McDavid nearly as much as his own parents do and think that he’s more valuable than any dollar amount could ever dictate, but I’m still trying to pack my brain back into my skull after finding out that he has a rookie card currently up for auction with the current price sitting at a little more than $70,000 USD. I mean, that seems wild, no?
So what do you get? Here’s the lot description:
Fantastic 2015-16 Upper Deck The Cup Connor McDavid rookie patch auto numbered 97 of 99. The card number of 97 matches McDavid’s jersey number! The card has been encapsulated and graded by PSA MINT 9. It has a beautiful 5-color break patch in white, orange, and blue. It is signed by Conor McDavid with 97 inscription beneath the patch swatch. The card is hobby fresh and was just pulled at Jaspy’s case break, comes with the original “The Cup” box autographed by both the breaker from Jaspy’s and the consignor.
So what exactly makes this particular card so special? For Jordan Gilroy, the director of acquisitions for Lelands, it’s a combination of factors:
“If this card wasn’t one of 99, and if it wasn’t his jersey number, I’ve seen them sell for $25,000 or $35,000 for a similar grade. It’s really interesting how the jersey number printed on the card can turn this from $35,000 to possibly $100,000.”
According to the Edmonton Journal, the previous record for the most expensive hockey card was set by another McDavid rookie card from the same set, which was a limited run of only 99 cards. That card was numbered 75 of 99 and sold for $55,655 USD on May 24th, 2018, with more than 80 bids coming in before the final price was set as collectors clearly believed in McDavid’s potential to be great.
The auction is set to close this coming Friday, which means we’ve only got a little over two days and nine hours to pool our money together to get in on the action. Judging from the bags of empties that I have stored in my basement, I’m good to put in an estimated $43 to the cause which leaves us only about $95,145 short of the current bid. We’ve got time. We can do this. Who’s with me!?
