After a week that saw him win three games and become a father to two beautiful children, the NHL has named Cam Talbot the first star of the week. So far, Oilers have been named the first star in both weeks the title has been given out.
This week, Cam Talbot went 3-0-0 and posted a 1.00 GAA and a .970 save per centage alongside one shutout. Talbot leads the NHL in wins with five, beating out seven other goaltenders who each have three wins of their own.
On the season, Talbot has posted five wins and one loss to go along with his 2.75 GAA and .919 save per centage. Both numbers are well above the league average early in the season.
Talbot’s week started off with a 31 save win against the Carolina Hurricanes in a 3-2 victory. Next, he shut down the St. Louis Blues with a 31 save performance which the Oilers won 3-1. He followed up with a 31 save shutout against the Winnipeg Jets yesterday afternoon in the 2016 Heritage Classic.
He also became a father to twins this week.
His shutout against the Jets makes him the third goaltender in league history to post a shutout in a regular-season outdoor game.
All of this comes after he gave up six goals including one from center ice against the Buffalo Sabres last weekend. Talbot’s strong performance this week is just a glimpse of what he can do for this team moving forward. While unlikely he continues posting numbers as good as he did this week, the team will heavily rely on him as they continue to work through the season.
The Oilers currently are the top team in the NHL.
