Yesterday on the NHL’s official site, Drew Doughty gave a quick interview about our beloved Connor McDavid and what it feels like to be a defenceman and watch his highlights after he does something incredible. As you’ll soon see, our captain seems to be occupying space in the minds of defenders everywhere.
“I shouldn’t say this, but all I’ve seen basically on my Instagram the last couple weeks or so is him getting breakaways and breakaways and breakaways. And that’s my No. 1 fear when I play against Connor; his speed and his moves are so quick that you have to honour his fakes because he’s so fast that you have to honour them. So that’s always my biggest nightmare, that I’m going to give up a breakaway and he’s going to make me look foolish.”
All season long, we’ve been forced to watch the needless debate about who’s the best player in the NHL and Drew Doughty weighed in with the answer that we all know is the right one.
“I don’t think there is anyone close. There are guys I’m sure that are close in speed, but they don’t have the whole package. He has everything: the vision, the hands, the shot, the edges, the movement, lateral movement. No one has it all like him.”
Yes, Drew, this is the McDavid-related content I like to read. Now tell us what it’s like to be on the ice and playing against him.
“Every time you literally think something bad could go wrong for your team when he gets the puck, and that’s how scary it is.”
I love this so much. Doughty is unquestionably one of the league’s best defenceman and to see him say that Connor is so good it freaks him out a little bit is the kind of stuff you can hook right into my veins. When asked about matching up against him on a shift by shift basis, Doughty admits that playing against Connor makes him perform at his best, but even then it won’t be enough.
“I go in there scared, and I think what I love about it is that I realize how good he is and I’m scared going into the game, and that makes me rise to the occasion a lot of times. There’s going to be times when he gets me, and there’s going to be times when I get him. That’s just the way it goes. Two really good players in the game, him probably being the best player in the game.”
I love this interview so much because it shows how much respect Connor McDavid gets from other players, even Norris winning defencemen like Doughty. Since we’re lucky enough to watch Connor play on a nightly basis, I think it’s important that we all get reminders like this about how great he is and how fortunate we should feel that he’s on our team. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again here now, Connor McDavid is worth every single minute you spend watching him and it’s always fun to find out that even his opponents feel the same way.
