Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid fires back after ‘dangerous’ trip

Connor McDavid is upset.

He’s upset that once again he was erroneously taken out and no penalty was called. But this wasn’t a ticky-tack call well away from the play, no. It was a dangerous trip that he is all to familiar with.

During Monday night’s 4-3 comeback win over the Calgary Flames, McDavid got taken out at the feet as he drove the Flames net crashing hard into Jacob Markstrom. Edmonton scored — despite a coaches challenge — and no penalty was called on the play.

Chris Tanev was the culprit much like his former teammate Mark Giordano in 2019.

“Obviously they have the right to defend their net and defend me trying to get in there but when the stick kinda comes into the feet there like Tanev’s did it’s a dangerous play for me and the goalie,” said McDavid. “I think you’d like to see that called a little more.”

The play was reminiscent of that 2019 incident that saw him taken out suffering a fully torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), torn medial and lateral menisci, fully torn popliteus muscle, a complete tear of the posterior capsule and a tibial plateau fracture. Thankfully this time, McDavid not Jacob Markstrom were injured.
