The Edmonton Oilers superstar scored his 60th goal of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday night. It ended up being the overtime game-winner as the team beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-3.

For McDavid, it’s been a season like no other as he’s run away with the Rocket Richard trophy. He last took the lead in the scoring race on December 7th, 2022 amid a two-goal performance against the Arizona Coyotes. He never stopped scoring, either.

Prior to this 60-goal campaign, McDavid’s previous career high in goals came last season in when he scored 44 goals in 80 games. Goal scoring has never been an issue for McDavid. During his eight-year career, he’s scored 30 goals seven times and 40 goals four times. The only season he didn’t score 30 or more came in his rookie season which was shortened due to a broken collarbone.

His scoring pace this season has him on the mark for 68 goals on the season, a mark that hasn’t been hit since Mario Lemieux scored 69 goals in 1995-95. McDavid now becomes the fourth player to join the 60 goal club in the salary cap era. Alex Ovechkin was the first to do it scoring 65 goals in 2007-08 and it wasn’t done against until Steven Stamkos’ career year in 2011-12. The most recent player to do it was Auston Matthews, who scored exactly 60 goals in 73 games last season.

With 10 games left in the season, it’s not entirely out of the question for McDavid to go on a run and hit the 70-goal mark this season. Nothing is impossible with McDavid, but the 65-goal mark is well within reach. Since 1990-91, only five players have scored 65: Alex Ovechkin (65 goals, 2007-08), Mario Lemieux (69, 1992-93, 1995-96), Brett Hull (70, 1991-92; 86, 1990-91), Alexander Mogilny (76, 1992-93) and Teemu Selanne (76, 1992-93).
