It’s milestone after milestone for the Edmonton Oilers.
Tonight Leon Draisaitl scored his 50th goal of the 2022-2023 season. Perfectly, Draisaitl scored a hat-trick against the Anaheim Ducks — the seventh of his career. The goal came shorthanded at the 4:59 mark of the third period. Louie Debrusk described it as a “Messier” like shot on the broadcast.
Only he and Ovechkin have three or more 50-goal seasons among active players since 2004-05.
This is Draisaitl’s third 50-goal season. He joins Jari Kurri and Wayne Gretzky as the only Oilers to have three or more 50-goal seasons. Surprisingly this is Leon’s second hat-trick of the year, you’d think he would have more hattys on the road to 50. For Draisaitl, his three goal performance marked his 54th multi-goal game since he debuted in 2014 — the third most among NHLers over that time.
With five games remaining, it’ll be interesting to watch if Leon can reach a new career high in goals. He scored 55 last year and his 50th came against the Anaheim Ducks as well.
His scoring by month.
October: four goals
November: 11 goals
December: six goals
January: eight goals
February: seven goals
March: 11 goals
April: three goals
The next milestone on Leon’s radar is the NHL record for powerplay goals in a season. Tim Kerr currently hold the record scoring 34 powerplay goals in 1985-86. Draisaitl currently has 30 making him first to hit that number since Mario Lemieux 1995-1996. Can Leon set a record that even great Oilers of the 80s couldn’t set? He’s got five more games to do so. Edmonton has one more game against the LA Kings, two versus San Jose Sharks, one against Anaheim and they play the Colorado Avalanche one last time this season.
