What it all means
The Oilers are playing some of the worst hockey of their season this last month. It’s been… rough to say the least.
For the second seven-game set, the Oilers put up an awful .357 points percentage bringing up some awful memories as the team continues to sputter. Edmonton needs to look at their defensive zone play as one of the roots of these issues.
For the fourth set in a row, Edmonton has given up 3 or more GA/60 and are amongst the bottom of the barrel in that stat all season long. Goals for, too, have largely dried up in recent weeks.
Mike Smith’s ability to give good goaltending at the start of the year is gone, but the good news is the bottom-six is seeming to wake up and contribute more than they had early in the season.
All in all, Edmonton has been shot and they can’t control the bleeding. At even-strength, I’m expecting there to be some positive regression in the future. Edmonton’s shooting percentage and save percentage are both unsustainably low and could provide some room for the team to bounce back in the next set of games.
The Oilers are continuing their eastern road trip with a stop in Boston Saturday morning, before rolling through Toronto and Montreal. They head back west for an away game against Calgary, then embark on a homestand against Nashville, Arizona, and Calgary once again to close out their next seven-game set.
Banked points from early this season are dwindling away and if Edmonton wants to be playoff-bound, they need to bounce back in this seven-game set.
