Edmonton Oilers ink defenceman William Lagesson to two-year extension

The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman William Lagesson to a two-year contract extension.

Lagesson, 24, appeared in eight games last year for the Oilers scoring no points. The cap hit over the deal will be $725k.

Drafted by the Oilers in the fourth round of the 2014 draft, Lagesson has been developing his game in the NCAA and the AHL. In the last two years, he’s appeared in 92 games for the Bakersfield Condors where he has scored 11 goals and 37 points as his offensive game has flourished.

Post-draft, he had played two seasons in the NCAA for UMass-Amherest scoring 15 points in 63 games. The flourish of his offensive game in the AHL has been great for Lagesson’s development.

While he only appeared in eight games, Lagesson looked solid despite playing just under 12 minutes a game. At 5v5, e played the most minutes with Matt Benning. Lagesson posted a 48.75 CF%, a goals for rate of 25 percent (2GF-6GA) and an xGF% of 41.27.

Lagesson had a very low on-ice shooting and save percentage that combined for a 91.9 PDO suggesting his numbers were dragged down by those two stats.

While Benning on his own was a great third-pairing defenceman, Lagesson’s numbers in the incredibly small eight-game sample size was dragged down by the former with the Swedish rearguard playing better away from Benning.

Currently playing for HC Vita Hasten in the HockeyAllsvenskan league right now, Lagesson’s offensive game has continued to flourish. He’s scored three goals and nine points in 11 games and when the NHL season kicks up, Lagesson will get a long-look at breaking into the Oilers regular lineup.
