Oilers prospect Skyler Brind’Amour wins Rookie of the Year with Quinnipiac Bobcats

4 years agoEdmonton Oilers prospect, Skyler Brind’Amour, made a little bit of news yesterday when it was announced that he had won the Rookie of the Year honours with the Quinnipiac Bobcats as voted by his coaches and teammates.
Skyler Brind’Amour, the son of current Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, was drafted by the Oilers in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Draft after his rookie season with the Chilliwack Chiefs. After a couple of seasons in Chilliwack, Brind’Amour made his collegiate debut with the Quinnipiac Bobcats in 2019-20 where he registered four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 34 games, which was enough to be named the team’s best rookie.
Shortly before the draft, McKeen’s Brendan Ross summarized Brind’Amour’s game:
The son of former NHL star Rod Brind’Amour, Skyler was one player who immediately caught my eye at the OHL Cup. He’s a big kid with a great frame to build on and he owns some solid fundamental skills. At 6-foot-1, Brind’Amour has good length and he uses it as an advantage in his attacks. His puck skills, especially in traffic, are very impressive showing very little panic. His on-ice reads were excellent identifying soft areas and playing to them. Brind’Amour plays an OHL-style of game using quick touches and can extend possession time with his confident puck handling abilities. He came into the tournament as an unknown for me but quickly climbed my draft rankings.
While Brind’Amour remains a long term project, the Oilers still have some time before making a decision on the 6’2″ centreman. Brind’Amour is expected to return to Quinnipiac for his sophomore season in 2020-21.
