The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed forward Devin Shore to a two-year contract extension, the club announced Wednesday.
Shore’s contract will be see him get paid an AAV of $850,000.
The 26-year-old joined the Oilers last season on a one-year deal and scored five goals and nine points in 38 games. Largely a fouth-line player, Shore also spent time on the Oilers penalty kill playing 1:11 there per game.
Two of his goals this year were on empty nets while another was a shorthanded tally late in a Jan. 18 game against Montreal that was already out of reach.
At 5×5, Shore struggled in Edmonton. The team controlled only 38.35 percent of the shot attempts (worst on the team) and 34.62 of the goals (5th worst). His expected goal share of 40.49 left a lot to be desired, too. While his 98.6 PDO suggests some of it was poor luck, his underlying numbers aren’t far off from his career averages.
Among 364 forwards who played over 362 minutes of 5×5 time this year, Shore’s shot attempt share was the worst in the league and his goal share was 15th worst. His expected goal share was 7th worst.
According to hockeyviz.com, the Oilers offensive expected goal share fell 38 percent below league average with him on the ice, but defensively, the Oilers’ expected goal share was 11 percent better than league average suggesting there was some value there in him. Despite that, the Oilers were heavily outscored with him on the ice making those defensive numbers less valuable.
Shore played a hard, physical game for the Oilers, but his re-signing begs to ask the question of what the Oilers see in the player that justifies a two-year extension for a replacement-level player.
The true value comes in a low contract value that could easily be buried in the AHL.
