The Edmonton Oilers shared the first images of their Fanatics-branded home uniforms to social media on Wednesday morning — and, unsurprisingly, there’s not much different about them.
Fanatics, which is taking over the official on-ice NHL jersey contract from Adidas for the next 10 years, is manufacturing the new threads in the same facility where they’ve been produced for the last 50 years.
The Oilers switched back to their classic royal blue, orange, and white uniforms in 2022 and have no plans to move away from them in the immediate future. Their Fanatics jerseys look almost exactly the same as they did at the end of Adidas’ time with the league.
Daily Faceoff‘s Frank Seravalli published a feature about the new Fanatics uniforms on Wednesday morning in which he detailed each of the changes from the Adidas template to the one now in use.
The biggest one: Fanatics has removed the pattern of dimples along the shoulders that graced each Adidas uniform, instead opting for a smoother texture that more closely matches the rest of the jersey.
Beyond that, the Adidas logo above the namebar has been replaced by a Fanatics one, a new holographic NHL shield now sits at the bottom of the collar, and there is more reinforcement in place along the elbows. The Oilers did not make any design changes to their uniforms beyond these Fanatics-standard template edits.
Before switching back to their classic Gretzky-era uniforms, the Oilers wore primarily orange home jerseys with navy blue accents for the first five years of Adidas’ tenure as uniform supplier. Amidst waning fan support, those jerseys met their merciful end in time for the 2022-23 season.
Only four teams have made major changes to their uniforms in conjunction with Fanatics taking over from Adidas. Both the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks have shifted to ’90s-inspired looks; the Boston Bruins have reverted to their modern uniforms after wearing special home, road, and alternate jerseys in 2023-24 to celebrate their 100th season; and Utah HC will wear basic black jerseys after relocating from Arizona in the spring.
In March 2023, Fanatics signed a 10-year deal with the NHL to become the league’s official jersey supplier from 2024-25 to 2033-34. The American sportswear company previously manufactured “Breakaway” replica jerseys for the league while Adidas made the on-ice products.
The Oilers played in the final game featuring Adidas NHL jerseys on Monday, wearing their road whites as they fell 2-1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.
