The Edmonton Oilers are the heaviest favourite they have been in over a year as they welcome the New Jersey Devils to town.
The Oilers opened as -235 home favourites (bet $235 to win $100) on the NHL odds for Wednesday night at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, with the New Jersey Devils coming back at +175 (bet $100 to win $175) and a 6.0-goal total.
According to the OddsShark NHL Database, this is the deepest into minus money that the Oilers have gone since a game against the Buffalo Sabres in January 2018, and Edmonton is also 4-1 at home this season against teams from the Metropolitan Division. The Devils are a respectable 5-7 in their last 12 games when they were an underdog of +175 to +225 on the moneyline.
Virtually every game is a must-win for the Oilers, who are six points out behind the Arizona Coyotes (with one game in hand), who have slipped into the final Western Conference playoff position. The Oilers’ last four games have all been one-goal contests, with the most recent being Monday’s 3-2 overtime win against the New York Rangers where Leon Draisaitl had one goal and two assists while Connor McDavid and Matt Benning also scored.
That skein of tight games likely explains the 6.0-goal total, but the struggling Devils carry two strong OVER trends. The total has gone OVER in six of New Jersey’s last eight away games against Pacific Division foes and has also gone OVER in five or their last six away games as an underdog of +175 to +225 on the moneyline.
McDavid is on a nine-game point streak, including multiple-point efforts in five consecutive games. But he has only one goal on 12 shots over his last three games and could be due for better puck luck. The Oilers are 22nd in NHL scoring with 2.78 goals per game, while the Devils are 24th with 2.75.
This is the teams’ second and surely final meeting of the season. New Jersey beat Edmonton 5-2 back on October 6 when the teams met in an NHL Global Series game in Gothenburg, Sweden, but the neutral venue, point of the season and the fact the Devils had Taylor Hall healthy renders that game virtually irrelevant for betting purposes.
Edmonton has the next two days off after this game before a three-in-four stretch comprised of a home game against Arizona on Saturday, followed by road games against the Vegas Golden Knights and St. Louis Blues on Sunday and Tuesday. The Devils, who are 27th overall in the 31-team NHL, visit the Vancouver Canucks on Friday and the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday to conclude their six-game road swing.
