Fight Friday: Season’s Beatings

6 years agoHello out there, I’m on the air, it’s Hockey Fights today. This is a weekly feature where we will take a look back at the best tilts of the week that was, a fond look back at the fights that were, and a strong finger wag at the worst fight of the week.
A dozen recaps of the weeks that were the fights, we include all of the holidays in this one. There has been 19 fights in the two weeks since I have brought you this feature article. That brings our season total up to a not-so-whopping 135 fights so far. That my friends is a bad sign indeed.
This week we have the top fight of 2017, a stare down off the draw, and a nasty hair raising incident.

No. 3:
Fredrik Claesson vs Tim Schaller
Failed to load video.
The not so rarely seen, defending your teammate after a big clean hit, but rarely seen W for that player. The only real loss here for Bruins fans is having to listen to that NESN crew.
No. 2:
Christopher Wagner vs Michael Chaput
This is a heck of a build up to what was a decent little fight. Earlier in the game Wagner took down Chaput in a rough interference play. Chaput was not happy. Don’t read lips kids.
No. 1:
Erik Johnson vs Zac Rinaldo
Failed to load video.
Johnson sees Rinaldo one hand an unsuspecting teammate (more on that later) and takes exception. Our viewers over at Hockeyfights gave the ‘W’ in this bout to Johnson by a 98.9% margin. About as sound of a beating you can hand out these days.

Over the holidays and into the New Year, we at the Hockeyfights social media team took the time to count down the Top 5 fights of 2017 as voted on by you the fans. You can see all of them here:
This was voted number one, with an 8.7 total rating of the fight between Matt Martin and Adam McQuaid.
Finger Wag of the Week:
This is where we normally feature the one fight that probably deserved two minutes for occurring, rather than a major. Or a player that needs to be put on blast.
Nazem Kadri

I give Kadri full marks here. Taking on a guy who clearly out reaches him in every sense of the word. He shows some cajones there.
That’s where my props for him end. He goes to grab Thornton’s collar in mid-fight and gets a full fist of hair. At this point, it seems fine. If you have been in a scrap, you know sometimes things happen. But when you get a hand full of hair, you let go. You try and grab again. Kadri? He doubles down and pulls harder.
The end result of the bout was a pile of Thornton beard laying on the ice. Gross, pathetic and just plain disgusting.
