First Star, Worst Star: October 18, 2015

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The NHL and NFL seasons are in full swing. We’ve got amazing October baseball (I still believe in you Jays) every night, and First Star, Worst Star is back to help nurse your Sunday hangover! LET’S GO!

FIRST STAR

What an absolutely magical night in Calgary last night! For those of you who don’t spend your Saturday’s constantly refreshing Twitter and may have missed it, I hopped onto a bus with about 50 other Oiler fans as we took Calgary and their garbage arena by storm! (Seriously nothing about the layout of the Saddledome makes any sense. It’s a labyrinth of walk ways and spiral stair cases, and 90% of the Scotiabank ATMs at the Scotiabank Saddledome were out of order. It was horrible). Obviously our entire section was filled with Oiler fans, but to my pleasant surprise there were Oiler fans EVERYWHERE at the dome! I’d say it was a good 60/40 split between Flames fans and Oiler fans. It almost felt like a home game!
AND WOULDN’T YOU KNOW IT THAT ALSO JUST HAPPENED TO BE THE GAME WHERE THE OILERS OFFENSE DECIDED TO SHOW UP AND CONNOR MCDAVID FIGURED HE WOULD GRAB A GAME BY THE THROAT AND HAVE HIS WAY WITH IT!
This is the game we’ve been waiting for; the team played really well, just as they did against St. Louis and Nashville in the first two games (results notwithstanding), the offense finally started to click, Cam Talbot was doing amazing Cam Talbot things as usual, and they finally got to play a crappy team that allowed them to get their first win of the season!
It was a great night all around, and I think we can all agree that hopefully this is the spark the team needed to finally trend upward for the majority of the season. Obviously they can’t play sadsack teams like the Flames every night unfortunately, but as I’ve been saying all week, if they play like this every night the wins will come.
LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THAT AMAZING MCDAVID DANGLE ONE MORE TIME!!
*Never stops fainting*
WORST STAR
Uhh, hey, Columbus? Hey, yeah, I’m not sure how to break this to you, but….. the season started a week and a half ago. You guys did get the memo, yes? Because looking at the standings it appears you have failed to show up for any of your first six games this season. 0-6? How does that even happen? Even the hilariously bad Edmonton Oilers team last year went 1-4-1 in their first six. What the hell happened Jackets? You were on pretty much everyone’s radar as a team to finally make a decent run at the playoffs. You took advantage of Chicago’s never end cap crunch and landed Brandon Saad. Ryan Johansen is only 23 and continues to get better and better every season. You’ve got solid depth players in Scott Hartnell, Brandon Dubinsky and Nick Foligno. And Sergei Bobrovsky is just two years removed from a Vezina win!
Oh Bobrovsky, what happened to you man? You used to be a fun, happy-go lucky guy who we all loved pretending was the lead character in an 80s cop drama. But now? Now you’re just a huge bummer who can’t stop a puck
and drops super depressing quotes!
Obviously it’s still very early in the season, and they have plenty of time to pull themselves out of this tailspin, but man, if they can’t find a way to win a game here real soon we might have to legitimately pencil in the Blue Jackets as a contender in the Auston Matthews derby. GET IT TOGETHER COLUMBUS! You’re embarrassing yourselves! (But seriously though please keep losing as much as possible so that there’s a nice safety net for the Oilers to not be the worst team in the league, JUST IN CASE!)
