The Edmonton Oilers will be aiming to strengthen their grasp on second place in the North Division standings with a third straight victory when they return home on Thursday to face the Calgary Flames as -145 favorites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com (how the moneyline works).
Winners in six of eight outings, Edmonton is coming off a pair of decisive road victories in Winnipeg which leave the club three points up on the third-place Jets heading into Thursday night’s matchup at Rogers Place.

In addition to leading the Jets by three points, the Oilers also hold two games in hand on Winnipeg, and can look forward to a favorable schedule down the stretch which is dominated by dates with opponents currently outside the playoff picture. Edmonton has also continued to get great performances from its goaltenders and blue line corps, allowing just seven total goals in five outings since suffering a lopsided 5-0 loss in Calgary on April 10.
However, the team has struggled to get offensive contributions from up and down the lineup. Once again, it was Connor McDavid powering the Edmonton offense in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory in Winnipeg, with the Oilers captain setting up all three goals.
McDavid has been simply spectacular of late, getting in on 15 of the team’s 19 total goals over the past five games, tallying five markers and adding 10 helpers. But apart from Tyson Barrie, Jesse Puljujarvi, and Leon Draisaitl, who along with McDavid have accounted for over 70% of the team’s goals and assists over the past three games, there have been few offensive contributions from the Oilers’ supporting cast.
The combination of hot goaltending and sporadic offense has generated a boon for those taking the UNDER at online betting sites, which has paid out in 10 of the club’s past 12 outings. The UNDER has also prevailed in each of the Oilers’ past two meetings with Calgary, with the team scoring just three total goals in those contests.
And with the Flames buying into head coach Darryl Sutter’s defense-first philosophy, more of the same could be in store for Thursday night. Calgary hits the road for a pair of dates with the Oilers after closing out a four-game homestand with a 2-1 loss to Montreal that has once again left the team perched squarely atop the playoff bubble.
Now lagging six points behind the Canadiens in the race for fourth place, the Flames no longer control their own destiny. The team has looked primed for the playoffs while winning five of eight, and surrendering just 15 total goals during that stretch. However, they have surrendered 13 total goals while losing three straight in Edmonton this season.
