The Leafs opened the scoring in the first minute of the first period. Mitch Marner fed Auston Matthews with a cross-zone pass and he fired it into the wide-open net for his 34th goal of the season.
Toronto extended their lead to 2-0 in the second period off of a goal from defenceman Morgan Rielly. Mitch Marner threw a puck toward Edmonton’s net from just inside the blueline and Rielly joined the play and buried the rebound.
Immediately after, Zach Hyman appeared to cut his former team’s lead in half with a beautiful solo effort, but the goal was called back because of an offside.
Later in the second period, the Oilers were finally able to get on the board. Evan Bouchard made a pass to Leon Draisaitl and he fired a backhander that made its way past Toronto goaltender Martin Jones to make the score 2-1.
The Oilers tied the game at 2-2 early in the third frame with a goal from their third line. Mattias Janmark got the puck in deep and Ryan McLeod fed a pass out front to Derek Ryan, who snapped a quick shot from the slot past Jones for his fourth goal of the season.
The game appeared destined for overtime but Ryan McLeod put the Oilers on top with just over three minutes left on the clock. Cody Ceci threw a shot on goal from the point, McLeod picked up the puck behind the net, wrapped it out front, and roofed a shot over Jones to make the score 3-2.
The Leafs pulled their goalie with over two minutes left in the third period and Evan Bouchard sealed the win for the Oilers with an empty net goal.
