Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first GDB in a back-to-back weekend that sees the @Edmonton Oilers square off against the @Florida Panthers and @Carolina Hurricanes.
It’s not often that the Oilers find themselves working through a weekend with a pair of back-to-back matinees (here in Alberta anyway) but that’s exactly what’s on tap for the next couple of days. In round one, the McDavidless Oilers have made their way to Sunrise, Florida, to try and get themselves back in the win column after a tough loss on Thursday night at the hands of the @Tampa Bay Lightning. In that game, the Oilers got a free lesson on what it truly looks like to be a contender and I hope they took whatever they could out of that defeat before moving on. Despite the expectation that only six fans will show up today, the Panthers are a very good hockey club and this afternoon’s game is going to be a massive challenge for our boys, especially with the absence of their captain still poking a massive hole in the depth chart as well as @Zack Kassian putting himself on the shelf with another suspension.
As I was putting together today’s GDB, one of the first things I noticed was how many goals the Panthers have been able to score this year, and that they’re doing it without having two of the league’s leading scorers available to them. Instead, what the Panthers have is a roster that’s ripe with point producers that are littered throughout the lineup, making this game a sure challenge for the Oilers on the defensive side of the puck. Not only will this skeleton crew have to try and work some magic in the offensive zone, but they’ll also have to bust their asses to make sure they’re taking care of their own end as well. Coming into today’s contest, the Panthers have eight players with more than 30 points as compared to five for the Oilers (two of whom aren’t playing), and it’s going to take some steady defensive work from the crease on out to keep Florida off the board. If the boys are going to get themselves back in the win column, they’re going to need to play as a unit with all four lines finding ways to chip in.
When these two teams met up back in October, the Panthers absolutely ran the show with six goals from six different players, burying the Oilers in offence that they just could not stop from happening.

LINEUPS…

Oilers

RNH – Draisaitl – Yamamoto
Archibald – Sheahan – Chiasson
Benson – Haas – Gagner
Khaira – Cave – P.Russell
Klefbom – Larsson
Nurse – Bear
Jones – Benning
Koskinen
I want to note that my line combos are just a guess based on the limited information that I’ve seen on Twitter. We know that Benson is in and that Koskinen is starting, but outside of that, everything else is me just taking a swing at how the line combos might look. Today’s game was already going to be a tough one for the Oilers with @Connor McDavid on the shelf, but things didn’t get any easier with @Zack Kassian taking a seven game suspension after kicking @Erik Cernak in Thursday night’s game against the Lightning. Seeing as the Oilers are already short a handful of guys, losing Kassian as well was one of the last things they needed right now, and it’s frustrating because his absence was 1000% avoidable.

Panthers

Huberdeau – Barkov – Dadonov
Connolly – Trochek – Acciari
Vatrano – Toninato – Hoffman
Hawryluk – Sceviour – Pysyk
Yandle – Ekblad
Stillman – Stralman
Matheson – Weegar
Bobrovsky
The Panthers first line is an absolute killer and it’s going to be interesting to watch how the Oilers try to keep them quiet. The problem, though, is that even if they do manage to keep them off the board, the Panthers are getting production from basically everyone else as well, which is going to mean a lot of our boys are going to have to step their games up just in order to maintain pace.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING…

From The Rat Trick:
The offense has run dry while the defense continues to worsen after each passing game. There are times where the blue line holds up and produces a sound game, but those efforts have been rare in sight.
What’s been their main issue now for countless seasons has been their defense core, which wasn’t fully addressed this past offseason. Instead, a stop-gap was signed in @Anton Stralman – who provides some sort of defensive presence, but not much in defensive stability given his age and injury history.
It shouldn’t have to be said but the Florida Panthers are in need of another top-four defenseman who is stable defensively, preferably left-handed and can play on the left side, but most importantly, can handle top-pairing minutes while playing alongside @Aaron Ekblad.
The Cats have looked for this type of defenseman for a couple of seasons now, but they haven’t done much to try and acquire this said player. Realistically, the farm system is too thin to even begin thinking about finding an in-house option and free agency is just too costly when players like these hit the open market. That leaves the Panthers with one option remaining: the trade market.
Florida has assets that they can part with to acquire this needed player. Whether or not they are willing to give up these assets is another story. But if they are serious about improving what’s unquestionably been their most glaring issue, while filling an area of need during the season, then Dale Tallon is going to have to be willing to roll the dice and take a chance.

Game Day Prediction: After a slow start that saw the boys give up a goal in the opening minutes, Edmonton battles back with three straight goals that power them to a 3-1 victory.
Obvious Game Day Prediction: We’ll be able to count the number of Panthers fans on both hands.
Not-So-Obvious Game Day Prediction: I can feel it in my bones that today (TODAY!) will be the day that @Patrick Russell finally scores his first NHL goal. When it happens, I will immediately text Gregor to brag about my NSOGDP excellence.
