The @Edmonton Oilers rolled into the Honda Center to take on the @Anaheim Ducks (and processed to roll right over them). @Connor McDavid scored a hattrick, @Leon Draisaitl had four assists, and @Ryan Nugent-Hopkins grew up a little bit more with two timely goals that set the team on its way. It was the first of a two-game California road trip, and The Moms were along for the ride, cheering their boys on from a luxury box.
Here’s a quick recap of the game.

First Period

  • Connor rings it off the bar less than a minute in! Kassian has a couple of chances to bury in on the doorstep, but gets stopped.
  • Nuge finally gets his first 5v5 goal! It’s like him having his first beer all over again! With Mom in the crowd too! 1-0 Oilers.
  • Ugh. @Rickard Rackell ties it on a pretty ugly goal. 1-1. Yuk.
  • @Mikko Koskinen refuses to be rattled and makes an unreal toe-save to keep it tied up.
  • Connor takes a slashing penalty. But it’s okay, special teams are life.
  • HA! Rackell can’t help but take his own penalty, which he elects to be a trip, which is the least cool penalty to take. 4-on-4 hockey.
  • A standard hockey puck is 1 inch thick, 3 inches in diameter, and weighs about 6 ounces. Connor shoots it through an area that looks about that size or smaller between Gibson’s right pad and blocker. The Moms are stoked. 2-1 Oilers.
Oilers look good, edging the Ducks in shots 10-9. Dallas Eakins has to be proud of the work ethic.

Second Period

  • Koskinen stops an early flurry from the dastardly Ducks, and @Zack Kassian takes a penalty… Oilers deploy their mighty PK.
  • The Ducks are no longer mighty, but the Oilers’ PK is. They kill the penalty without incident. Special teams are life.
  • Connor chooses to shoot on a 2-on-1! And it’s a hell of a shot! But he takes his second penalty of the game… The mighty PK goes to work again.
  • Koskinen is the best penalty killer for the Oilers, even getting a little aggressive behind the net! The Oilers PK unit remains immaculate. Special teams are life.
  • @Gaetan Haas draws a penalty on @Ryan Getzlaf! Oilers to the powerplay!
  • NUUUUGE! He earns his second light beer of the game, this time on the PP! The Moms are dancing, Dallas Eakins can’t believe it! 3-1 Oilers!
  • @Kris Russell takes a penalty (he must feel bad for the not-so-mighty Ducks). The Oilers’ PK back to work.
  • Special teams are life. The PK remains flawless, killing off the penalty like it’s chopping wood. Or carrying water. Or no doughnuts in the media room…
  • Kassian scores a goal as nice as that duster of his! 4-1 Oilers!
  • Another penalty, another kill for the Oilers. They have some sort of cheat code, don’t they?
  • @Patrick Russell gets a superb chance on a breakaway, but stopped is stopped by @John Gibson.
  • The cycle game is strong in this game for the Oilers.
The Oilers out here chopping that wood and carrying that water. Eakins has to be shedding a proud, private tear in the Ducks dressing room. 4-1 Oilers. Making The Moms proud too. It’s almost like the team having their moms around on a road trip to California has kept them out of trouble or something…

Third Period

  • Koskinen starts the period out strong again, making a couple of nice saves less than a minute in.
  • Some guy on the Ducks named Jones takes advantage of some hard work behind the Oilers net and sneaks one over Koskinen. 4-2 Oilers.
  • Connor gets hooked, slashed, and tripped on a partial break, and none of it can stop him from scoring the nicest goal of the night. We are not worthy. 5-2 Oilers.
  • Haas plays so hard along the boards, he draws a penalty. The powerplay’s clicking and it gets back to work.
  • Klefbom makes an incredible no-look pass to Connor at the right hash-mark, who buries it to turn the ‘trick. Hats fly onto California ice as everyone basks in the greatness of @Connor McDavid. 6-2 Oilers.
  • The Oilers wrap up the game with another powerplay, but they don’t need it.
Oilers win decisively, 6-2.

Final Thought

The Oilers played their hearts out for The Moms, and earned a decisive victory against a division rival. The powerplay went 2-for-4 and the penalty kill was perfect. Special teams are life. @Leon Draisaitl and @Connor McDavid continue their dominance atop the league, with four assists and a hattrick, respectively. Nuge gets off his 5v5 schneid with the opening goal, and added another later on as he, hopefully, starts to heat up again. Koskinen looked solid and kept the Ducks at bay anytime they would surge. I hope Dallas Eakins is proud.
The Oilers go to their hotel beds leading the Pacific Division, three points up on the @Calgary Flames.
On to San Jose.
