Connor McDavid is back, what else is there to say?? Let’s get this preseason over with all ready! But first, the @Edmonton Oilers had to deal with the @Arizona Coyotes and their third string goalie.
It wasn’t ideal, but here is the the recap of that game.

First Period

  • Connor starts the game! He looks great as he stretches his legs and gets rollin around the ice.
  • @Sam Gagner takes an early penalty, but that’s no problem for the first PK unit led by @Colby Cave, as the Oilers kill off the penalty without any problem.
  • Jack mentions that one of the players on the Coyotes was bitten by a scorpion (I think he meant stung, but anyway) and Bob questions how that could happen, Jack replies that he doesn’t know, to which says that if there “were any ways that could lead to your demise, that would be my favourite,” then quickly adds, “I got your back!” But Jack is clearly unsettled that Bob’s put some thought into Jack’s death.
  • At 10:38, Connor gets a very nice chance. Then @Alex Chiasson gets one soon after, but the Arizona goalie, Adin Hill, makes some good saves.
  • 7:44 mark of the period, @Mike Smith gets beat high glove side from the right face-off dot by @Lawson Crouse… 1-0, ‘Yotes.
  • @Oscar Klefbom takes a holding penalty, but once again @Colby Cave sets the tone on the PK and the Oilers kill it off without a problem.
  • @Mike Smith suddenly faces a flurry of shots and makes a nice diving save to his left.
  • @Matthew Benning rips a shot from the blueline, and beats Hill, but can’t beat the post.

Second Period

  • @Adam Larsson makes a great backhand pass from behind the net… right into the slot in front of Mike Smith to @Michael Bunting who gets an easy goal on Smith… 2-0 ‘Yotes…
  • Jack and Bob then proceed to bicker about how that happened: Bob blames it on a miscommunication between Larsson trying to spring Connor up the middle, Jack just thought it was a careless play.
  • @Darnell Nurse takes two separate high-sticking penalties on the same play…
  • @Riley Sheahan and @Josh Archibald start on the PK, and clear it relatively quickly to clear the way for Colby Cave and the Danish @Patrick Russell to come out and really get the extended PK under control.
  • The cool and controlled penalty killing leads to a shorthanded 2-on-1 for @Jujhar Khaira and @Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Nuge rips home a nice shorty!! Nuuuuuge
  • Nuge gets another good look from the left face-off circle, but Adin Hill turns it away.
  • We find out that @Joel Persson isn’t on the Oilers bench, and Jack and Bob bicker about who would be taking his spot between @Ethan Bear, @William Lagesson, and @Brandon Manning.
  • Colby Cave gets two great chances down low, but just can’t get them past Adin Hill.

Third Period

  • @Mikko Koskinen comes out to start the final frame.
  • Jack and Bob debate over which teams will crack 100 points in the Western Conference, but the feed on the Oilers site starts to cut out so I miss the gold from this discussion (if someone wants to fill me in, please do!)
  • Nurse sets up and gets burned by @Vinnie Hinostroza, who feeds @Michael Grabner and beats Koskinen…
  • Jack asks Bob if he remembers Cliff Branch, which Bob acknowledges that he has, and Jack tells us that Michael Grabner reminds him of Branch. Cliff Branch was a WR receiver who played for the Oakland Raiders from 1972-1985, and then Jack and Bob proceed to discuss other NFL players from the 70s… Your guess is as good as mine why this was a topic…
  • Josh Archibald feeds the puck across the crease, and Riley Sheahan gets a solid header on it and beats Hill with it! 3-2!! Jack then asks Bob if he remembers “someone who intentionally headed it in back at Rexall Place?” Jack can’t remember the player, but he remembers the opposing team because of course he does but doesn’t tell us who it was. Who was it??
  • We get the 50/50 break, and when we come back Jack tells us that he and Bob use the preseason to “dust off elephantine memories” and we’re finally told that is was @Andrew Shaw who scored that header when the @Anaheim Ducks played the @Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Finals one year. The Oilers weren’t actually involved at all!! Apparently that’s why Bob was confused!
  • Grabner gets a partial break but Connor uses his fancy new PCL to chase him down and breaks up the scoring chance. No rust here!
  • So @Derek Stepan scores after the shot from @Kyle Capobianco ricochet’s off of @Kris Russell’s knee and lands right on his stick. 4-2.
  • Leon feeds @Sam Gagner in the slot and he gets a great chance, but Hill turns it aside.
  • Bunting high-sticks Connor and he goes to the box for 2mins, but it should be longer.
  • The Oilers head to the powerplay, but Jack and Bob debate who should be the three stars of the game who are all Coyotes so I find this pretty rude.
  • Nuge gets a brilliant chance in the slot after a feed from Gagner, but Hill makes actually a pretty nice save… I guess…
Oilers lose 4-2. Darn it.

Final Thought

Though most of what many believe will be the opening night lineup, the team didn’t look outstanding. This, however, is not a concern. It’s still preseason, and if Oilers fans have learned anything over the past few seasons, there shouldn’t be too much stock taken in a preseason performance. Though Nuge continues to impress, and Connor looked like he hasn’t missed a step. The injury to Persson is interesting, as it may lead to Bear or Lagesson to getting a longer look in the last two preseason games.
On to Winnipeg.
