GDB 37.0 Wrap Up: Oilers will want to flush that one, fall 4-0 to Montreal in lopsided loss

That was a tough one. Final Score: 4-0 Canadiens
I need to start this off by taking a minute to talk about how hilarious it is that we had a random make-up game tossed into the schedule this week. I mean, I obviously knew that it was going to happen after last week’s games against the Habs were postponed, but sitting down to write a wrap up on a day when we weren’t supposed to be watching hockey was yet another reminder of how strange this NHL season really is. COVID problems, ya know? Not nearly as funny, however, was the fact that the Oilers gave up another first-shot goal only 18 seconds into the game, a follow-up marker just over three minutes later, and a third towards the end of the frame. I know I’m not the best at math but I can tell you with certainty that giving up a field goal in the first period makes winning in this league a whole lot more difficult.
With a sizeable hole to climb out of and 40 minutes to get it done, the Oilers needed improvement in basically every facet of their game if they were going to get to within a cab ride of coming back. And while the Oilers looked slightly better as the game progressed — it was a low bar to clear and I’m being extremely generous — they struggled mightily to get any form of sustained pressure with many of their (limited) shots coming as softies from the outside of the ice. Honestly, this was about as bad as the Oilers have looked all year and it was tough to watch. I think part of the problem they had is a result of playing as much hockey as they have over the last couple of days, but that’s still no excuse for why they were so badly outplayed by a team that hasn’t see the ice in over a week. Yeah, you could argue that the Habs were well rested, fired up to play again, and blah, blah, blah but the reality is that the Oilers were dreadful and they got the result they deserved. All I can hope is that this loss pisses everyone on the team off as much as it did for all of us.
The wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • The game is over now.
  • It’s hard to find positives to fill up this section so I will let you guys know that I had lasagna for dinner and it was delicious.
  • I like @Tyler Ennis in the lineup so much more than Dominik Kahun and I’m very confused why he comes out for him so often.
  • @Adam Larsson never gets any love but I’m going to give him some. Why? He had seven hits on the night and I’m trying to find silver linings.
  • Even when the Oilers are bad, @Kailer Yamamoto always works hard and I appreciate that.
  • Shout out to Willy Lagesson for trying to get the boys going with a scrap against Josh Anderson. It didn’t work, but I appreciate the sentiment.
  • As sure as we all are that the sun will come up tomorrow, so too can you set your watch on having me let you know the Oilers won 51% of the faceoffs? Small victories, friends.

THE FACE PALMERS

  • @Jesperi Kotkaniemi opened the scoring only 18 seconds into the game after Dave Tippett decided to start the 4th line and they all got caught too deep in the zone, allowing the Habs to turn things around and bury the first shot of the game. For some reason, Tippett also decided to challenge the goal
  • Only moments after the opener, @Artturi Lehkonen gave the Canadiens some insurance (2-0) after the Oilers got caught puck watching and left a loose puck available right near the side of the net. To be honest, the whole play was a yard sale of mistakes and it wasn’t exactly surprising to see the hole get a little deeper.
  • @Brendan Gallagher added more salt to the wound with Montreal’s third goal of the game (3-0) towards the end of the first period after he outworked a trio of Oilers to knock a loose puck in the crease into the empty net. Honestly, it’s hard to accurately describe
  • @Tomas Tatar added Montreal’s fourth goal of the game (4-0) after Jujhar Khaira got caught with a turnover in his own end and the Habs were able to turn it around quickly. Within seconds, the puck was in the back of the net.
  • As far as starts go, the Oilers could not have done worse than what we got and I’m still annoyed just writing about it. Speaking of which, I still don’t understand why Dave Tippett chose to challenge the first goal when it seemed so obviously onside upon review. At the very least, I thought the play was way too close to risk a challenge on and clearly the refs agreed.
  • Sticking with Tippett, why didn’t he get any fresh legs into the lineup when he knew his guys would be tired after playing so much over the past few days?
  • Passing to one’s teammate was a real struggle here. It seemed like everything was either a foot long or a foot short and the results were exactly as you’d expect.
  • It’s not often we see McDavid and Draisaitl as frustrated as they were against Montreal, but this was just not their night. Or anyone’s night for that matter.
  • I know a lot of people are understandably going to pile on @Mikko Koskinen for the way things went but I don’t really think that’s totally fair. While I’m not at all defending him, he needs to be better in every way and didn’t do a whole lot to prevent the outcome, the team in front of him certainly didn’t make things any easier on the guy.  Either way, this was a disaster start for Mikko and one that will probably prevent another start any time soon. Koskinen finished with 28 saves and a .875 save%.
  • Much like the rest of the game, the powerplay looked disjointed and out of sync in their three chances with the man advantage.
  • The Oilers were handily outshot by a 31-17 margin. We pay tribute to the Corsi Gods but, once again, the Corsi Gods are angry.
  • @Evan Bouchard I miss youuuuuuuuu.
