Happy game day, Nation! Here we are on a beautiful Thursday afternoon in the capital city and I’ve got a fresh GDB set to help us all get set for the @Edmonton Oilers to take on the @Los Angeles Kings for the second of four meetings this season.
To put it lightly, this is a huge week for the Edmonton Oilers. With four divisional games in a row and two points already in the bank, the boys have an excellent opportunity to keep putting some distance between themselves and the rest of the Pacific Division. On Tuesday night, the boys put the boots to the @San Jose Sharks, avenging last week’s loss with a statement game of their own, and I wanted to see the good times keep rolling tonight against Los Angeles. I mean, let’s be honest, the Kings are a garbage fire team this season and I can’t think of any good reason that the Oilers shouldn’t be able to walk away from this one with two points outside of maybe the fact that Todd McLellan might be putting a paycheque up on the board as bait. How bad do you want to win, Todd? Would you sacrifice a couple of suits and haircuts for it?
As you’ll see in the numbers section below, the Oilers are beating the Kings in basically every metric outside of a couple which tells me that science is on our side, and the only real question, as far as I’m concerned, will be whether or not they play down to their competition or throw them in the deep end of the pool with cinder blocks for shoes. To put it another way, you don’t have to be a fan of the nerd math to agree that the Oilers need to get a quick start, execute their game plan, and find a way to win against a team that’s much lower them in the standings. I mean, how many times were we on the other side of an LA beatdown? How many times have we all stayed up past our bedtimes to watch a horrific California loss? Too many, for my liking. And to me, this is another opportunity to work on the killer instinct that we’ve been talking about all season, and rather than giving the Kings life, the Oilers find ways to kick them while they’re down and steal their lunch money while they’re at it.
In their first meeting of the year, the Oilers showed some resiliency after they were forced to make three separate comebacks in order to close out the win, and while I’m hoping for the same end result, I’d rather not see as many hiccups in getting there.

LINEUPS…

Oilers

Draisaitl – McDavid – Kassian
Khaira – Nuge – Neal
Nygard – Sheahan – Archibald
Granlund – Haas – Chiasson
Nurse – Bear
Klefbom – Jones
Russell – Larsson
Smith
After carving the Sharks on Tuesday, I wasn’t expecting Dave Tippett to make many changes outside of sliding Adam Larsson back into the lineup. And with Matt Benning shaken up after taking that two-hander from Evander Kane to the side of the head — I still don’t understand how the refs missed that one btw — it seemed like there was a built-in spot on the third pairing which would allow Larsson to get himself back up to speed. According to Gregor, Benning is likely to miss a couple of games and while we never want to see our guys getting hurt, you have to admit that the timing of Larsson coming back worked out pretty well.

Kings

Iafallo – Kopitar – Brown
Carter – Amadio – Toffoli
Kempe – Lizotte – Wagner
Clifford – Prokhorkin – Luff
Walker – Doughty
Hutton – Martinez
Roy – MacDermid
Quick
Be honest: When you’re looking at the Kings lineup how many players do you actually recognize?

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING…

From LA Kings Insider:
Todd McLellan, on using Alex Iafallo to the left of Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown:
31 teams coaching staffs would play him like we do, because coaches tend to like players they can trust in all situations. He’s got the tools, he uses his toolbox, he gives you everything he has whenever he can, and what else can you ask from a player? There’s no shortcuts, there’s no cheating. If he makes a mistake, it’s a mistake. So, I enjoy putting him on the ice, It’s probably a formula that others need to realize or understand. He’s not going to lead our team in scoring, but he’s got to find ways to play a lot of important minutes, because we want to keep putting him out there.
Dustin Brown, on how the shift in the 1-3-1 affects his line and the first two forwards into the zone:
Generally speaking, we want our right wingers on that red line on the right side just the way we’ve been playing. As a group of three, I think we’ve gotten into a pretty good rhythm in that neutral zone, because maybe once or twice in the time that I’ve played with them – I’ve been a few games off that line – but consistently it helps me, because that’s a new position for me to play, that kind of ‘hold pattern’ over there. I’ve been on the forecheck and neutral zone maybe four or five times, a handful of times, so again, it comes back to just learning it.

Game Day Prediction: The Oilers get a big night from Connor and Leon it powers them to a 4-1 win.
Obvious Game Day Prediction: The Nation remains disappointed that we’re nearing the end of November and Dave Tippett has yet to give us the #TipStache.
Not-So-Obvious Game Day Prediction: As a reward for scoring a big second period goal, Dave Tippett gives Nuge the day off tomorrow so that he can experience a heroic encounter with Captain Marvel.
