GDB 31.0 Wrap Up: Rangers @ Oilers

If you can’t score, you can’t win. Final Score: 2-0 Rangers.
If I’m being honest, I missed the first 10 minutes of tonight’s game because I was eating far too many delicious chicken wings.  I knew that the game had started, but my wing-mouth pleasure radar was spiking far too much to contain, let alone focus on the Oilers game.  My wing frenzy was intense.  When the frenzy had finally subsided, I was surprised to see that the Rangers had not even registered a shot nearly 10 minutes into the game.  It seemed like, from the stats alone, that the Oilers were able to organize a solid start despite the lack of scoring.  As always, the question would be whether or not they could sustain what they started?
Tonight, it wasn’t the effort that was the problem, it was the lack of finish.  The lack of finish wasn’t helped by the lack of shots either.  As a general rule, you’re not going to score on Henrik Lundqvist with weak shots from the perimeter.  I don’t think it would be unreasonable to say that 80% of the Oilers shots were from low scoring areas. The Oilers have to find a way to get scoring chances from the dirty areas of the ice.  It’s hard to beat NHL goalies, especially Lundqvist, with weak shots from the boards/blue line.  Can we chalk this up as a win in the moral victory column?  I’m not sure I can keep track of what counts anymore.
We wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • Brad Hunt must be part of the McDavid plan.
  • I had a great power nap in the 2nd period.
  • Ben Scrivens played a very solid hockey game. He finished with a  .952 save%.
  • The Oilers played a decent enough game, but they couldn’t score.  It’s tough to win when you can’t score.

THE FACE PALMERS

  • I’m not sure how the Oilers recall Brad Hunt ahead of Martin Marincin. Damned sideburns!
  • Rick Nash successfully extends his point streak to 10-games. Nice. Really nice. *sigh*
  • Henrik Lundvist is so good, and it’s annoying that the Oilers haven’t been able to develop a goalie in decades.
  • Overall, this was a boring hockey game.  There was a lot of back and forth, but not much else in terms of action.
  • The Oilers can’t score.  For all the talk of this being a skilled hockey team, the Oilers are averaging just over 2 goals scored per game.
  • 1 win in their last 16 games.  Think about that.
