GDB 32.0 Wrap Up: Oilers @ Coyotes

Welcome back, MacT! Final Score: 2-1 Coyotes in OT.
Obviously, everyone was going to be watching this game to see how the Oilers performed under the Reign of MacT 2.0.  Wasn’t it hilarious to see MacT behind the bench again?  When OilersNation started, around these parts, we once had a FMNF acronym before hashtagging was even a thing.  Ahhh, the memories.  It meant “Fire MacTavish Now Fu…” Whoops. Sponsors, man.  Anyway, back then, the GDB’s were filled with the usual suspects of commenters that formed what was then known as the Justice League.  A lot of those people are still around, two of us are even employed by the Nation.
At the time, we wanted Craig MacTavish to be fired as the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers.  We were all so certain that maybe, just maybe, a new coach would turn this thing around.  Maybe a new coach would be able to guide the Oilers back into the playoffs.  We debated, in the comments section, for hours.  If only we had known then just how far down this rabbit hole would go.  So for me, seeing MacT back behind the bench was both nostalgic, and really sad at the same time.  In OilersNation’s infancy, we thought that a new coach would be the answer.  That was four coaches ago, and, somehow, we’ve dropped even further in the standings from where we were at back then.  How has this happened?
The Oilers did seem to have some jump tonight, at first.  Then, throughout the entire 2nd period, the Coyotes basically had their way with the Oilers.  The Oilers were outshot by a ratio of 5 to 1 in the 2nd period.  If it weren’t for Scrivens, the Oilers would have been down by 2 or 3 goals.  Their play did improve in the 3rd period, and parts of overtime, but it was very apparent that Todd Nelson has a lot of work to do.  I mean, we all know that, but now Todd Nelson knows that.
We wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • MacT is still as handsome behind the bench as he was in 2008.
  • Nugey is the NHL’s greatest toddler.  Nuge is starting to carry the play a lot, and he’s only going to get better.
  • Neither Sam Gagner nor Tobias Rieder scored tonight! Every small victory counts.
  • It was nice to hear the media speaking positively about Todd Nelson.  They said the same kind of things about Eakins 2 years ago, but a few nice words are nice to hear every now and then.
  • Matt Hendricks was solid on faceoffs all night.
  • Scrivens was really solid.  He was the the only reason the Oilers were in this game. Scrivens finished with a .955 save%.

THE FACE PALMERS

  • Having Justin Schultz and Brad Hunt as a pairing was absolutely terrifying.
  • At least MacT got a first hand look at how bad the Oilers can be.  They were dominated throughout the 2nd period, outshot 26 to 5.  If not for Scrivens, they would have been way down.
  • I can’t believe that’s how the Oilers played with the GM standing on the bench.  It’s not like the Coyotes are setting the world on fire.
  • I can’t figure out what Brad Hunt does, aside from having a big shot? Anyone?
  • Todd Nelson has a ton of work to do.

BEST OF THE TWEETS
