GDB 36.0 Wrap Up: Flames @ Oilers

Someone will blame the turkeys – I know it.  Final Score: 4-1 Flames.
Show of hands… Who finished watching the World Junior game, and skipped the beginning of the Oilers game entirely?  I’ll admit it. I finished watching the Canada game because I wanted to watch Darnell Nurse and Connor McDavid (3 points tonight).  I can’t believe it’s already that time of year where we ignore what the Oilers are doing to focus on what’s happening in a junior tournament.  Frankly, it’s a well deserved break.  It’s fun to watch a winning hockey team, even if it is only for a couple weeks.  Every Oilers fan can use some winning at this point.
As for the Oilers game, they probably had the worst start that anyone could have ever imagined.  For the 2nd game in a row, the starting goaltender was pulled in the first few minutes of the game.  Viktor Fasth let in 3 goals on 6 shots, including 2 goals from Johnny Gaudreau.  When the Oilers did have scoring chances, Jonas Hiller was making saves.  The Oilers are really struggling to score goals 5 on 5, and to make matters worse their power play certainly isn’t bailing them out.
At the end of the night, it was another chapter in the endless saga that is the Oilers.  Regardless of the Christmas break/MacT being on the bench/another new head coach the Oilers are still losing, and I don’t see when it will end.  In my opinion, this loss knocks the Oilers down another peg to another new rock bottom.  Possibly the lowest moment came in the 3rd period when Taylor Hall completely bailed on Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins while they were in a scrum in front of the net (next captain indeed). What else can I say? The Oilers lost another game in the first few minutes of the 1st period.  That’s the 2014-15 season in a nutshell.
We wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • I can sleep in tomorrow.
  • I haven’t taken off my sweatpants for 3 days.
  • Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is racking up the takeaways.  He has got a very quick stick.  Nice to see him get rewarded.  Nuge looks like one of the few that actually cares.
  • Ben Scrivens was solid in relief of Viktor Fasth.  He stopped 20 of 21 shots and finished with a .952 save%.

THE FACE PALMERS

  • Awful start.  Again. Were you expecting otherwise?
  • Johnny Gaudreau scored 2 goals in 16 seconds.  Ridiculous. You cannot deny that the kid is amazingly skilled.
  • Viktor Fasth got pulled after he let in 3 goals on 6 shots. Brutal.
  • The Power Play was brutal.
  • Another tough night for Justin Schultz defensively.  He could use another night in the press box.
  • Jordan Eberle and Nuge were in a mini scrum in front of the Calgary net.  They had all 5 Flames in the mix, and Taylor Hall looked back and skated away.  He looked completely disinterested.

THE #NATIONLIMO

When you have tickets to the game, head to the Pint Downtown and you could win a ride to, and from, the game in a limo.  On top of that, we’ll hook you up with some Nation swag and an Oodle Noodle GC.  All you have to do is let the bartenders know that you want your name on the list.  You should also note that this isn’t some special event, this is happening every home game.  Write that down, take a screep cap, or lock it in your mind locker.  It’s a good time, and you should be there.
