GDB XXXV: A fine evening for a Capital game

This morning as the snow fell over Edmonton and promptly melted, there was a buzz in there — one of hockey’s superstars is in town.
With Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals slated the hit the ice against the recently-hapless Edmonton Oilers tonight at 8pm, more of the focus tonight seems to be on watching Ovechkin play rather than see the Oilers win. Allow me to re-direct your focus.
After winning five straight on the road (the only five games the Oilers have won in their last ten), the Oil are struggling. And Pat Quinn is apparently struggling not to go all Michael Douglas from Falling Down on his players, whose effort over the last two games has been inconsistent at best.
Meanwhile, the Capitals have seven wins in their last ten, and according to Gregor’s weekly league update, Ovechkin has the second highest number of goals scored in the entire NHL.
So the question tonight is: are the Oilers totally screwed?
According to my hastily assembled panel of deceased Allied WWII leaders capable only of repeating their own famous quotes, the answer seems to be… well, inconsistent.
Dead Churchill: "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
Dead Stalin: "History shows that there are no invincible armies."
Dead Roosevelt: "One thing is sure. We have to do something. We have to do the best we know how at the moment… If it doesn’t turn out right, we can modify it as we go along."
Dead De Gaulle: "China is a big country, inhabited by many Chinese."
There are three things we can discern from these quotes:
  1. The Oilers should ignore Churchill. The Oilers have already proven failure doesn’t get you anywhere.
  2. The Capitals are not invincible. Stalin says so.
  3. Charles De Gaulle was a knob.
I’m not saying the Oilers will win tonight. I’m not saying that. What I am saying is that if they DID win, the score would be 2-1.
I’m going to go cross my fingers and various other appendages, down several beers and offer prayer to several non-existent gods now.
So say we all.
