It was two years ago today that Bill Daly flipped the golden card that gave the Oilers the luxury to draft Connor McDavid, and I wanted to take a minute to wish you all a Happy Connorversary!

Do you remember where you were on April 18th, 2015? I do. I was sitting on my couch watching the playoffs when Sportsnet broke into their draft lottery proceedings. At first, I wasn’t even really planning to watch it. What was the point? I had already gotten myself into the headspace that the Oilers would be drafting Noah Hanifin or Dylan Strome and trying to convince myself that they would be worth the wait. They may not be Connor McDavid, but they’ll be contributors down the line. I got myself to a place where I was cool with that fact. Never in my wildest imagination did I expect that the Oilers would have the golden card flip over in their favour.

As we all know, having Bill Daly flip over that golden ticket set off a series of events that changed the course of the franchise forever. Within days, the Oilers had moved MacT into a dark corner somewhere, hired Peter Chiarelli, landed Todd McLellan, and started one final death march that resulted in the former face of the franchise, Taylor Hall, getting moved to New Jersey for Adam Larsson. Some may call it luck, some may call it a deal with the devil, but whatever it was that actually happened to have Connor McDavid land in our lap might be one of the greatest gifts the Oilers have ever seen. And on this day I will always remember how lucky we are to have him.
