When you head over to nhl.com and check out the scoring page, you’ll see a few familiar faces at the top of the league scoring chart: Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid.
Through two games, Draisaitl already has five points while McDavid’s four-point performance last night shot him up the charts. It’s a great statistical start to the year for both players who undoubtedly will be near, or at the top of the league’s goal-scoring chart at the end of the season.
One of the biggest storylines to follow when it comes to the pair is exactly how many points they’ll put up. They’re as rested as they’ve ever been in their career and Draisaitl’s already scoring at a 2.5 PPG clip, while McDavid’s posting a 2 PPG clip.
Could they keep it up? Well, when you’re the two most offensively powerful players in the league I suppose anything could happen. Scoring two points per game pace all year would put them at 112 points at season’s end.
For McDavid, that would be five points off from surpassing a career-high of 116 points. And for Draisaitl, he would surpass the 110 points he scored in 71 games last year to mark a new career-high.
We saw Thursday night how the pair are able to take over games. Draisaitl scored four assists and had a “quiet” night by all accounts. McDavid, meanwhile, made all of the noise scoring three beautiful goals to lead the Oilers to victory.
It’s been two decades since a player scored two points per game in the NHL. In 1995-96, Mario Lemieux appeared in 70 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins scoring 69 goals and 161 points for 2.3 PPG. He nearly clipped two points per game in 2000-01 scoring 76 points in 43 games.
So how many points do you think these two superstars will score? Leave a comment down below.
