Today marks the first ever episode of Inside the Nation, Dusty Nielson’s Facebook Live show that will focus on all things Oilers and the NHL at large. In this week’s episode, Dusty looks at the Oilers training camp, the cuts that have been made, the cuts that are to come, and what they mean for the team moving into the season.
To start, Dusty wanted to make sure that everyone got a tour of his basement to make sure that everyone understands the level of production that we’re going to put into these videos. High def? Hell no (we’ll fix that, we promise)! But serious, getting to the Oilers, Nielson looked through the latest rounds of cuts as they Oilers move towards getting their season-opening roster. He also took a look at the line combinations for tonight’s game against the Jets, and whether or not it makes sense to play Ryan McLeod in between Khaira and Puljujarvi.
From there, Dusty talks about what the Oilers can do to improve the power play, including playing Connor McDavid on both units as a means to balance out the lines. He wrote about it this morning, and further dove into what the formations might look like. With the way the power play struggled last year, there’s no reason that they shouldn’t be thinking outside the box. Lastly, Nielson looks at Ryan McLeod’s chances of making the roster and whether or not that makes sense this early. Needless to say, it was a jam-packed first episode of Inside the Nation with lots of Oilers talk from training camp.
