Hockey super insider, Elliotte Friedman, appeared on Sportsnet 960 in Calgary this morning and was asked what kind of moves that are likely to come for the Oilers after what has been a disastrous season.
With the 2017-18 season being a total failure for Peter Chiarelli’s Oilers, it’s no surprise that the wolves will be circling the team come deadline time. One of the names that teams will be calling about is Pat Maroon, who will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. While there were rumblings that the Oilers and Maroon were talking extension in the summer, it appears that his days in orange could be drawing to a close.
When asked about Maroon, Friedman said what we’re all expecting:
“I think he’s going to get traded”
Well, I think he’s going to get traded too, Elliotte, but anyone that looks at his contract status would probably guess that same thing, no? Any chance they keep him?
“I would be surprised if they keep him. I don’t see any way that he finishes — I shouldn’t say that because there’s always a way — but I would say it is extremely, extremely unlikely that he finishes this year in Edmonton.”
I guess having both Lucic and Maroon isn’t really going to work, huh? Personally, I know which guy I’d keep around but the other one’s contract makes that situation almost impossible. So let’s pretend you’re another GM, why would you look at Patty Maroon for a playoff push?
“(Maroon) plays a heavy game, which is always better for the playoffs, and he’s shown that he can play with faster players. He had a good chemistry with McDavid. So yeah, there’s a lot to like about him.”
Yeah… That’s what we like about him too. But I wonder if the fact that he’s slowed down a little bit lately would hamper his trade value?
“I’m sure there will be a lot of interest. And he’s not going to cost you as much as Evander Kane would or Hoffman would or someone else like Pacioretty.”
Right, so what you’re saying is that those guys will probably get an actual player or prospect in return whereas Chiarelli will likely target a shiny new bean for the collection. Got it. I imagine this will be on the agenda for the bye week meetings that are coming up after tomorrow night’s game in Vegas?
“Those meetings are going to be something else. Those five days off, in terms of what they’re going to talk about”
Wouldn’t it be great to be a fly on the wall for those conversations? I wonder if MacT will look at Chiarelli and say something like, “well I could have done this badly” and then everyone has a hearty chuckle. What do you think?
“If I was them, I would probably keep it together for the rest of the year and not do anything – trade your UFAs – but not do anything crazy unless something just dropped on your lap that you couldn’t say no to.”
I mean, yeah, that all sounds great but with Panic Pete at the helm, you just never know what’s going to happen. We could end up kicking off #OperationBrownBananas earlier than expected.
“I think Edmonton is in a dangerous spot because you’re emotional, you’re angry, you can’t believe where you are. It’s almost when you have to take a timeout and say, ‘we’re closed for business because we’re not doing anything dumb.'”
Fake Chiarelli: Not do anything dumb? Hold my beer.
