The Edmonton Oilers will be looking to give themselves some important breathing room in the race for a playoff spot in the Western Conference when they host the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday as -133 favorites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Edmonton returns home from a three-game road trip riding a two-game losing streak, but still maintains a slender grasp on a top-three spot in the Pacific Division standings going into Saturday night’s matchup at Rogers Place.
Jets at Oilers | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Oilers closed out their road trip with a 3-0 loss in Vegas as +180 underdogs on Wednesday, and have now fallen to defeat in four of their past five outings according to the OddsShark NHL Database. Despite those struggles, the Oilers remain deadlocked with the Vancouver Canucks in second place in the Pacific Division standings, but also sit just a single point ahead of the fourth-place Calgary Flames.
While the Oilers took steps to bolster their lineup ahead of Monday’s trade deadline, one of those moves has quickly come undone. The team acquired defenseman Mike Green from the Detroit Red Wings prior to the deadline, but he is now expected to miss the next four weeks after suffering a knee injury. Forward Andreas Athanasiou, another deadline acquisition, suffered a lower-body injury against Vegas but he is still expected to play on Saturday.
As well, forward Kailer Yamamoto (ankle) has been back at practice, indicating he could be on the verge of a return. That would help alleviate concerns as to who will provide the Oilers with secondary scoring, as the team has tallied just 11 total goals during its current 1-3-1 run and has scored more than three goals just twice during a middling 2-2-1 run on home ice.
The Jets find themselves on the playoff bubble as they travel to Edmonton for Saturday’s matchup. Winnipeg is coming off a 3-0 victory over the visiting Washington Capitals as a +125 wager at online sports betting sites on Thursday night, but has struggled badly on the road, posting losses in seven of its past nine outings.
Scoring has also been a concern for the Jets, who have potted just nine goals over their past four games including just two goals per game in three straight road defeats. However, the Jets have dominated the Oilers in recent meetings, posting wins in six of seven matchups since December 2016, capped by a 1-0 home victory as -130 chalk on October 20.
