How good is Leon Draisaitl? How about ‘new NHL playoff record’ good. Let’s talk about it.
Even though he’s battling a well-documented high ankle sprain, @Leon Draisaitl doesn’t seem to be slowing down all that much as the former Hart Trophy winner finds himself all over the scoresheet through three games in this second-round series against the Calgary Flames. Through three games, Draisaitl has already recorded 10 points (2G, 8A) against a Flames team that is usually pretty stingy but doesn’t seem to have any answers for that line, making what happened last night in Game 3 incredibly special even by his lofty standards.
In the second period, Leon Draisaitl set a brand new NHL record for most assists in a single playoff period with the four helpers he picked up over the course of that 12-minute run. Prior to Draisaitl’s new record, there were 113 players tied at three assists in a single period with some names dating as far back as 1932. I don’t know if you fine readers have ever spent any time looking back at old footage from the way things used to be, but let’s just say that goaltending wasn’t exactly spectacular in the early days, and that makes this new record all the more impressive. Regardless, I think it’s pretty damned cool to see Draisaitl’s name up at the top of the list on a record that’s stood for a very long time and I wanted to take a minute to give him a shout out for his efforts.
Leon Draisaitl, we speak your name.
