LET’S BRING A CITIZEN HOME

Over the weekend friend of the Nation Owen passed along a story about his cousin Bill that is fighting for his life in Thailand. We want to do what we can to help bring him home. Be warned that this is not a hockey article, and there are no trade proposals going on here.
If you haven’t seen the story, Bill Hughes (shown above) is a local fire fighter that took a vacation to Thailand where he was bitten by a mosquito that was infected with the Japanese Encephalitis virus. The symptoms of the virus can vary from person to person, but it struck Bill with full force and landed him in a coma with his status not changing much since mid-January. Upon hearing the news, Bill’s daughter Jillian jumped on the first flight to Thailand and has been at his side ever since. It’s time to bring them both home.

HOW YOU CAN HELP…

As you can imagine, the Hughes family desperately wants to bring Bill home, and we want to do what we can to help make that happen. In order to get home the family needs to raise upwards of $200,000 to cover medical expenses and arrange a specialized flight with Angel Flight to ensure that Bill makes it home safely. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to collect donations to try and bring Bill home to resume care back in Edmonton. Obviously the family needs a warehouse full of cash to make this happen and anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.
If you don’t have any money available to donate we completely understand, but I ask that you still help us out by sharing the link to this article on your social media accounts. Don’t have social media? Plaster the neighbourhood with posters or tell your friends. Bill is an avid Oilers fan and a Citizen of the Nation and we wanted to use the platform we have to raise even more awareness, and help the Hughes family bring him home. To get thing rolling even more, the Nation will be donating $500 to the Hughes family to help the cause.
Thanks to all of you that took the time to read this, donate, and help us spread the word. If there’s one thing that the Nation can always be counted on it’s helping out a fellow citizen that is in need.

***UPDATE***

From Bill’s daughter, Jill, in regards to Travel Insurance:
I assure you that before making the decision to come back home I have exhausted all options available to us. My father is in one of the top hospitals in the country and the care is excellent, which is why We have stayed here as long as we could. Without giving out personal information about my father, we are told he will be in the hospital for an amount of time that greatly exceeds what our recourses will allow. I promise you I have already both thought of and thoroughly researched the points you brought up. Unless I win the lottery I will not be able to facilitate my dads recovery in Thailand. Trust me I didn’t want the hype either, we are simply in a bad position and are trying to do the right thing for him. Thank you for your concern and for the information. Jill
