It has been a massively underwhelming start to the season for the Oilers, who opened the campaign trailing only the Maple Leafs as +330 second favorites to win the North Division at sports betting sites. With just one win in their past four outings the Oilers sit closer to last place than first place with a 3-6-0 record, and now lag at +1100 on the divisional odds.
The team has surrendered five or more goals in three of its first nine outings, and 10 total goals during its current two-game slide, sparking a 3-0-1 run for the OVER in totals betting. But the Oilers have turned in steady performances against Toronto despite dropping two of their first three meetings with the Maple Leafs. Edmonton turned in arguably its best performance of the season in last week’s 3-1 win at Scotiabank Arena, and twice overcame deficits while outshooting Toronto 27-24 before giving up the game-winner late in Thursday’s 4-3 defeat.
Despite those spirited performances, the Oilers have plenty of work to do to snap a five-game losing streak against Toronto on home ice. A lack of secondary scoring remains a concern, with the trio of Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins potting 15 of the club’s 26 total goals. Draisaitl has been particularly steady during a five-game goal scoring streak, and has also racked up six goals and three assists over his past six dates with the Maple Leafs.
Now riding a four-game win streak, the Maple Leafs enter Saturday’s series finale set as -130 chalk. Toronto has surrendered just 2.29 goals per game during a 6-1-0 run that has lifted the team to the top of the NHL standings. However, the Maple Leafs have been far from dominant while winning three straight on the road, with each of those victories coming by just a single goal.
