McDavid among the top selling NHL jerseys

The NHL released the list of their top-selling jerseys this morning and the Oilers’ captain, Connor McDavid, ranks among the league leaders in overall units sold. Surprised? Unlikely.

Considering Connor McDavid has now won back-to-back Art Ross Trophies and is arguably one of the most marketable assets the league has in its stable, it’s not overly surprising that he would be among the league leaders in jerseys sold. Frankly, if you’re going to dawn a jersey then why wouldn’t you want the league’s best player? That said, the fact that he only finished in third (I’ve got the Top 15 coming below) is more annoying to me than I thought it would be, but then I put some thought into how bad the Oilers were this season and it starts to make sense.

After a playoff-less year in one of the league’s smallest markets, I can understand why Oilers fans weren’t rushing out to buy new jerseys and why generic NHL fans wouldn’t have been excited about the team either. Even so, our beloved captain still understandably moved some units this season, trailing only Sidney Crosby and Auston Matthews overall, which I consider a tribute to not only his greatness but also his overall sexiness as well. Just me? Unlikely. Don’t worry, Connor, we’ll get you back up top next year.

Personally, I’m a little bit surprised by TJ Oshie cracking the list. That’s not to take anything away from him, he’s a fine player, but I wouldn’t have guessed that his jersey is as popular as it was even though he’s been in Washington for three seasons now. Aside from that, everyone on the list made sense to me.
