The days are ticking away for the Edmonton Oilers and Kailer Yamamoto to sign a contract ahead of arbitration.
Jesse Puljujarvi and the Oilers got a one-year, $3-million deal done last week avoiding arbitration, and the Oilers will surely be trying to make the same happen with Yamamoto.
There should be some solace found, however, as I find it hard to imagine Yamamoto getting more. Puljujarvi (.55 ppg) was ever-so-slightly more productive from a points-per-game perspective than Yamamoto (.506), with the latter playing slightly more than the former.
Kasperi Kapanen had signed a $3.2-million deal avoiding arbitration ahead of his hearing, and I think that helped set the market on Puljujarvi. Now, I’d be willing to bet that Yamamoto comes in somewhere between $2.8-million and $3.2-million.

Todd Marchant hired in SJ

The former Oilers star has been named senior advisor of director of player development with the San Jose Sharks. He had spent the 11 years prior with the Ducks as working in player personnel and player development roles.
Taken by the New York Rangers in the 7th round of the 1993 draft, the Oilers acquired him a year later sending Craig MacTavish the other way. Marchant played 10 years in Edmonton amassing 678 games played — the 12th most in franchise history — along with 136 goals (17th) and 343 points (18th).

Bratt wants $6.5-million

Jesper Bratt is the first player to officially head to arbitration and both he and the New Jersey Devils have filed their contract asks.
According to DailyFaceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the Devils filed for $4.15-million, while Bratt filed for $6.5-million. Bratt is coming off a career year in year two of a deal that had paid him $2.75-million and is now looking for a significant raise.
And it’s well deserved. In 76 games this year, he scored 26 goals and 73 points besting his previous highs of 16 goals in 2019-20, 25 assists in 2018-19, and 35 points in 2017-18.
This will be one of the more intriguing hearings this year.

Kaprisov returning to North America

Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprizov has left Russia and is back in North America, The Athletic’s Michael Russo reported Monday. Kaprizov reportedly left Russia late last week by way of Turkey.
Here’s more from Russo’s report:
Kaprizov’s return to the State of Hockey comes five weeks before he originally intended. But after alarming reports emerged in the past month that he allegedly purchased a fake military ID card in 2017 and, regardless, had his military exemption expire June 30, the Wild, his agent and attorneys in Russia worked hard behind the scenes to get him over to the United States well in advance of the start of training camp Sept. 22.
The allegations that Kaprizov bought a fraudulent military ID card appear to have largely been refuted. Kaprizov is a student of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, which allows him to defer his military obligations. But it’s unclear if Kaprizov was able to exit Russia because the Wild got him his U.S. work visa or if his representatives were able to get him another military deferment in Russia.
Nevertheless, Kaprizov was caught up in a chilling political game over which the Wild had little to no control over his future. Wild owner Craig Leipold and general manager Bill Guerin both said publicly they would remain nervous until Kaprizov was back safely in the United States.
Once it was determined that Kaprizov was able to leave Russia, the Wild implored him to leave now rather than wait any longer.
Kaprizov was denied entry to the United States last month by way of Dubai and the Wild were dismayed when Kaprizov panicked and decided to return to Russia rather than sit tight and wait for further clarity. But now sources say he’s on U.S. soil and will continue his on- and off-ice training in Minnesota in preparation for the start of the 2022-23 season.
