NHL History: Oilers and North Stars combine for NHL playoff record

It was on this day in NHL history that the Edmonton Oilers and Minnesota North Stars combined to set a playoff record for the most powerplay goals in a single game.

On April 28th, 1984, the Oilers and North Stars combined to set an NHL record for the most powerplay goals in a single playoff game with seven. In Game 3 of the 1984 Campbell Conference Finals, the Oilers and North Stars went to battle in a spirited affair and combined for 71 penalty minutes, granting both sides ample opportunities with the man advantage. Despite giving up four powerplay goals on the evening, Edmonton managed five even-strength goals to go along with their three on the PP and walked away with an 8-5 victory to put a stranglehold on the series, eventually winning it in a sweep and moving on to the Stanley Cup Finals against the New York Islanders.

If you’re wondering, the current NHL record for most powerplay goals in a single game (regular season or playoffs) sits at 10, a feat that was accomplished four separate times with the most recent coming in 1989 during a game between the Flyers and North Stars.
