NHL History: Edmonton Oilers Glenn Anderson pots two in ’87 Smythe Division Finals

It was today in 1987 that a two-goal performance from Glenn Anderson helped lead the Edmonton Oilers to victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

It was a big win, at that, as it gave the Oilers a 1-0 series lead in an eventual four-game Smythe Divison Finals sweep of the aforementioned Jets.

Anderson’s first goal came at the 17:13 mark of the first period, while he potted the game-winner at the 36-second mark of overtime. He had a huge playoffs for the Oilers that year scoring 27 points in 21 games — the highest playoff point total of his career.

Edmonton went on to beat the Detroit Red Wings in the next round four games to one, while squaring off against the Philadelphia Flyers, who the Oilers beat for the Stanely Cup. Starting tonight, Sportsnet is airing the entire series against the Flyers.
