NHL History: Gretzky ties playoff record for most assists in single period
By baggedmilk
4 years agoIt was on this day in NHL history that @Edmonton Oilers legend, Wayne Gretzky, tied the record for the most assists in a single period during a playoff game.
On April 24th, 1983, Gretzky tied the record for most assists in a single playoff period after he put up a trio of helpers (Messier, Kurri 2x) in the third period of a Campbell Conference Finals game against the Chicago Blackhawks. To put it lightly, The Great One put on a show in Game 1 of that series as he registered five points in what ended up as an 8-4 final, including the game winning goal early in the second period. The Oilers would go on to sweep that series, dominating all four games in a lopsided fashion.
At the time of posting, there are currently 108 instances of players recording three assists in a single period during a playoffs game with the latest coming in May of 2019 when Colton Parayko got three helpers in the second period of Game 3 of their series against the Sharks.
