According to NHL.com, the Edmonton Oilers have two of the league’s top 20 centremen as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were both named among hockey’s best.
Now, I’m not normally into this kind of list, and don’t really think they matter all that much in the grand scheme of things, but, with that said, it is interesting to see the Edmonton Oilers getting this much respect outside of the 7-8-0. I mean, Oilers fans already know that Connor and Leon are legit but to have someone other than us saying it is a humble brag win in my books. If nothing else, having two of our guys on this list gives other NHL fans another reason to hate our beloved heroes, and that kind of saltiness is a welcomed change from being a laughing stock like we were for a decade.

CONNOR MCDAVID (#1)

While ranking Connor McDavid at number 1 isn’t really a stretch, it is a ballsy choice given that Sidney Crosby is #2 and is coming off his second-straight Stanley Cup. That said, it’s hard not to appreciate all of the things Connor can do with a puck at full speed, and to think that he is still going to get better is a trip in itself. Even so, ranking him ahead of Crosby? Ballsy.
According to NHL Network analyst, Mike Rupp:
“Nobody plays at the speed he does. His hands and his mind are working even faster than his feet are, and that doesn’t even seem physically possible. That’s what defensemen have to see every night with Connor McDavid.”
It’s true, right? How the hell does he do the things he does and how does he do them so fast? There’s a turbo button hidden somewhere and I’ll be damned if we don’t find it someday. But better than Crosby? There are going to be people that are angry about this—you know that, right?
“There is no ceiling. I haven’t seen it yet, and that’s why I think this guy’s No. 1.”
Truck yeah. I wouldn’t bet against Connor either.

LEON DRAISAITL (#15)

After setting a career-high with 29 goals and 48 assists for 77 points, Leon Draisaitl cracks the NHL’s list only a few short days after signing a brand new eight-year deal worth $68 million. Why does that matter for a “top players” list like the one we’re talking about? It doesn’t at all. I just think it’s an interesting coincidence that this list came out only a few days after some folks were upset about the kind of cake Draisaitl is bringing home.
Heading into his third full NHL season, I expect that Leon Draisaitl takes his progression to the next level as he looks to silence the critics that say he hasn’t proven he can anchor his own line. He proved that he was able to do that in the playoffs, and I think that Big Sexy 2.0 was just getting started. If I’m right, and Draisaitl can keep proving that there’s more to his game than being able to play with McDavid/Hall, then Edmonton will have the kind of depth at centre that every other team would kill to have.

THE WRAP

Like I said, there really isn’t much point to these kinds of lists aside from bragging about your favourite team’s depth chart. That said, having two guys on the Top 20 list is pretty sick. Not to mention, there are only three other teams (Penguins, Kings, and Capitals) with more than one player on the Top 20 list and that’s the kind of bragging that should be recognized. In the very least, you should send this article to your favourite Flames fan just to let them know what they’re up against for the next 10 years.

The complete list:

  1. Connor McDavid (Oilers)
  2. Sidney Crosby (Penguins)
